Chapter 50

“I’m pregnant.”

Mimi looked at her, sipped her drink. And started laughing.

Weird and loud. The kind of laugh that made everyone in the cafe turn to stare.

Elara kept her face serious. Completely straight. Not even a hint of a smile.

Mimi’s laugh started going quieter. Then it became a snort. Then she stopped completely. Looked at Elara’s face.

“Wait. You’re serious, oh?”

Elara nodded.

“You’re pregnant?” Mimi screamed. Every single person in the cafe turned toward them now.

Elara reached across the table and covered Mimi’s mouth with her hand. “Shut up. People are staring.”

Mimi pulled her hand away. Started firing questions immediately. “Wait, how many months? Who’s the father? When did it happen? How long have you known? Is he aware? Did he accept it?”

The questions kept coming, all fast. One after another without space to breathe.

Elara picked just one to answer. “Marcus is the father.”

“Bitch, what the fuck?” Mimi screamed again. Louder this time. “So you two have been fucking? Oh wow. So much for just a contract.”

“No, no. This was a mistake.”

Elara told her about the end of the year gala. The company party. How she’d been drinking champagne. How Marcus had followed her to the fire exit. The sex that happened there was unplanned, plus they used condoms, no idea how the pregnancy still happened.

It was a moment of weakness Mimi, I was going through a lot that period, don’t blame me, you can put the blame on the champagne.

Mimi looked at her and mimicked all she said in a mocking tone, it was a moment of weakness yen yen yen. Okay so what else?

Of course Mimi wanted details. Positions. Duration. Everything.

Elara just gave her the basics. “The kiss. The sex. It happened fast, nothing serious, it was just a sexy one night stand against the wall.

Wait sexy??? Mimi called out again.

Then she added quietly, “But honestly, he fucks really good.”

Mimi started laughing again. “So he fucks really good. That’s why you decided to get pregnant?”

Chapter 50

“Stop, this isn’t a joke, Mimi.”

55, vauntiers

“I know.” Mimi waved her hand. “Okay, so you found out during the Christmas holiday. That’s before the contract. Why didn’t you just tell him?”

Elara looked down at her coffee. “I was scared, you know. Didn’t know how he’d react. I actually thought I’d keep the baby and raise it by myself without letting him know. You haven’t met this guy, he’s intimidating and honestly sometimes I get scared to even play with him, he always looks so serious.

Then of course he presented the contract and now it’s almost too late to tell him. I don’t know how he’ll react, seeing that I’ve kept it away from him for a month now”

Mimi thought for a second. Then her face lit up. “Why not just tell him you got pregnant after the contract? Like during the trip or something?”

Elara shook her head. “Not possible. We haven’t had sex since the fire exit.”

“Wait, seriously?” Mimi looked genuinely surprised.

“Yeah. I mean, aside from what happened in Santorini. Not sex exactly but, you know, he fingered me and gave me head.”

“And?”

“Girl, this guy’s head game is crazy. Like actually insane. But the problem was he left me unfinished.”

Mimi’s eyes went wide. “Why would he do that?”

“Apparently I did something and it was his own way to punish me.”

Mimi did this thing with her hands. Like she was calculating something and thinking hard.

Then she looked up. Completely serious. ““Right. Does he have a friend? I want someone to punish me like

that too.”

She licked her lips.

Elara threw a napkin at her. “Go away. You’re so spoilt.”

They both laughed.

When they calmed down, Elara leaned forward. “Anyways, back to the pregnancy thing. I’m telling you because you always have solutions. What do you think I should do now? How do I tell him?”

Mimi thought for a moment. “Okay. Here’s what you can do. You’d go to the hospital and do the ultrasound. If possible, get the gender. Then prepare a nice date for you two. Something romantic. Wine. Candles. The whole thing. And announce it when he’s in the best mood.” You know, just show him the

result.

“That could work. But you’re coming to the hospital with me.”

“Of course I will na,I suppose leave you alone? Like this, now I’m a godmother. Please when is the baptism coming?” Mimi answered in her Nigerian accent. “Good.”

“Wait.” Mimi held up a hand. “You said you left out two tiny details. This pregnancy detail isn’t tiny at all, but what’s the second one tho.”

Elara ignored that. “Pregnancy first. The second one is I met another guy.”

“Wait. You’re joking.”

Elara pulled out her phone. Started scrolling through her photos. “In Santorini. He’s so cute. Damn. I mean, that’s the genesis of why Marcus even punished me in the first place.”

She showed Mimi the picture. Julius. Tall and handsome. Tanned skin. Curly hair. That smile.

Mimi started drooling. Actually drooling. “Na my type be this. Na him I want.”

“Stop it, Mimi. Na everybody be your type? Elara replied in the same Nigerian accent Mimi had been using, she had picked up some words and understood a little from years of friendship with Mimi.

“Of course. I have good taste.” Mimi zoomed in on the photo. Damnnn, he hot hot “Okay, what’s his number?”

“I didn’t collect it.”

“What? Elara!” Mimi looked genuinely distressed. Sometimes I wonder how we are even friends, at least tell me you gave him yours. Because after this two years contract with your boss, you’ll need one fine, handsome boy to take care of you.”

They started laughing again. Loud enough that the barista behind the counter gave them a look.

Elara’s phone rang immediately

She looked at the screen. It was her mum’s number.

“Hold on,” she told Mimi. Then answered. “Hello Mama?”
