Chapter 53

Elara woke up with her head scrambling, hangover headache? Only that this was ten times more crazy and the hunger in her? Her stomach grumbled angrily.

Her eyes were swollen now. She could feel them. Puffy and tender as her lashes clustered together from tears. Well this was the result she got from crying herself to sleep last night.

It was one thing when someone offended you, yes quite understandable, people offend people on a daily basis, shit she even offended Marcus, Yes.

It is another thing entirely when they don’t even acknowledge it, apologize or see anything wrong in what they’ve done.

She did offend Marcus, but she knew she was wrong, she tried to talk to him and apologize he just wasn’t interested. Her situation was so different.

Behavior like that is disgusting, pride and ego is one of the things that contribute to that, you never believe you’re wrong. Well that was Marcus yesterday.

Shit. Why didn’t she just eat yesterday night? Her stomach grumbled loud again, pulling her out of her thoughts. She was angry at herself for letting emotions get in the way of basic survival.

But there was no way she was going to eat Marcus’s dinner. Not after what he’d done. Not after he’d crossed that line with her mother like that without apologizing.

If there’s one talent Elara had, it was keeping malice. She was good at it. Expert, master level. If Marcus didn’t apologize, she didn’t mind staying in this house for two months without saying a single word to him. She could do silent treatment better than anyone.

She stretched hand to grab her phone from the nightstand.

11 AM.

Shit.

She and Mimi were supposed to go to the hospital today. The ultrasound appointment. Finding out how far along she really was. Maybe even the gender if they were lucky. And basic antenatal, she’s due for that.

Elara stood up quickly as she staggered to the bathroom. Brushed her teeth. The minty taste helped wake her up a little. Cleared some of the fog from her brain.

She took a quick shower. Hot water. Let it run over her face and wash away the dried up tears from last night.

When she got out, she wrapped herself in a towel and went to her wardrobe.

Nothing too serious today. Just comfortable and easy.

She picked a striped short dress. Those materials, round neck. It fell just above her knees. Casual but cute. Sprayed some perfumes and a little lipgloss, she oiled her legs and arms before grabbing her sunglasses and her bag.

She’d stop and get food on the way. Maybe a bagel and a cup of coffee. Something to settle her stomach before the appointment. Then maybe when they’re done, she and Mimi could go grab dinner.

Elara opened her bedroom door. Walked down the stairs.

And saw Marcus sitting at the dining table.

Two plates of food were set out. Eggs, toast, bacon. Fresh fruit. Orange juice in glasses. Coffee in mugs. The whole setup.

“Morning, Elara.”

Morning? Did he just say morning? Did he think she’d develop Alzheimer over night, forget everything and go back to acting like nothing happened? Like he hadn’t gone behind her back and told her mother about their marriage? Like he hadn’t dismissed her pain and told her to get over it?

If this dude thought he could do something wrong, sleep and wait it out, and act like it never happened the next day with no actual apology, then he must be out of his mind.

Elara stopped on the last step. She just stood there and looked at him.

Marcus smiled. Gestured to the empty chair across from him. “Come sit. Let’s have breakfast.”

Elara smiled back. Sweet and fake.

“You must be out of your mind, Marcus.” She kept walking toward the door. “Bon appetite husband, have a wonderful meal. I’m going out.”

She didn’t turn around but she knew exactly what his face looked like right now. Shocked. Surprised. Like he couldn’t believe she’d just walked past his peace offering without even considering it.

Good. Let him be shocked.

“Where are you headed, El?”

“None of your business, Thorne.”

She opened the front door. Stepped outside into the cold morning air. Closed it behind her before he could say anything else.

One of the drivers was already standing by the car. All ready and professional.. He opened the back door for her.

“No, no.” Elara held up a hand. “I’ll take an Uber.” She said as she closed the door.

The man looked scared. Actually scared. Like she’d just asked him to do something that would get him fired.

“Ma’am, please. Mr. Thorne said I should-”

“Don’t worry. I spoke to him already.” The lie came easily, there’s no way Marcus’s driver is taking her to the hospital, a different hospital, Marcus will definitely ask where he took her to and then she’d have some explaining to do which she wasn’t ready for right now.

Chapter 53

“Have your rest, okay? I’ll be fine.”

She walked past him toward the gate. The gateman saw her coming and opened it without question.

Elara stepped outside onto the quiet street. It was actually a quiet street, the houses there were like in competition on whose is the biggest, different penthouses, no one really walked on foot, everyone had cars, big and expensive cars.

Elara walked for a few minutes to get out to the main road where she hailed down a cab immediately. It stopped right in front of her.

She climbed into the back seat. Gave the driver the address of the hospital, she told the man she’d stop and get breakfast but she won’t stay long. The man agreed

As the cab pulled away, she pulled out her phone and texted Mimi.

**Elara:** I’m on my way. Where are you?
