Chapter 2
When I knelt outside the estate gates, no one recognized me as their former Donna.
I couldn’t even see Lorenzo.
Once, I finally stopped his car. I held onto his leg and wouldn’t let him leave.
Lorenzo just said calmly, “Sophia, you chose to leave. Leaving means we’re done. Don’t come to me with your problems anymore.”
Then he pried my fingers off and walked away without looking back.
I collapsed outside the iron gates.
In the final moments of my life, I saw him holding Elena in the rose garden I’d planted with my own hands. Kissing her with the glasses I’d picked out.
I knew he did it for me to see.
My chest tightened. I didn’t want to remember anymore. I pulled myself together and said calmly, “Lorenzo, I’m not jealous. I’m not mad at Elena.”
“I’m just tired. I want to go for a walk. Go back to the party. If you leave Elena alone, she’ll be upset.”
Something flickered in Lorenzo’s eyes.
I didn’t look at him again. I turned and walked into the night.
Back at my safe apartment in the city, I locked the door.
The first thing I did was call a private medical center and book a full checkup for the next morning.
This time, I just wanted to live.
Oh, and if possible, get a big divorce settlement.
I’d barely hung up when Lorenzo showed up at my safe house.
I didn’t get it. Our tenth anniversary was a huge event. Everyone at the estate was gossiping about him and Elena. Why was he here?
He tugged at his tie, looking annoyed. “Running away from home again? You always come to your safe house and wait for me to come get you?”
“You walked out on our anniversary. Did you think about my pride?”
“Sophia, stop giving me that look.”
Ever since Elena became his personal lieutenant, Lorenzo had gotten more and more bitter toward me. He criticized everything I did.
That harsh change in his attitude, plus Elena’s provocations, were what made me lose control in my past life and make everything worse.
I pushed down the ache in my chest, turned, and said calmly, “Lorenzo, believe it or not, I’m not angry. I’m not throwing a tantrum. And I’m not giving you a look.”
“See? I already took care of the mark on my neck. So I’m not holding it against you. And I wouldn’t dare hold it against Elena.” Then I walked into the bathroom and locked the door.
When I came out, Lorenzo was gone.
But my encrypted phone kept buzzing.
It was Elena’s habit. Whenever she was with Lorenzo, she’d send me real-time photos of them together.
She treated me like her personal cloud storage.
In my past life, I used to break down crying or storm off to confront Lorenzo.
Now, I looked at the photos she sent.
I didn’t curse her. Instead, I gave her honest feedback.
“Wrong angle. Lorenzo looks better from the side. Hold the phone higher next time.”
“Also, too much empty space in the frame. You two don’t look close enough.”
As soon as I sent it, Elena replied, “Did someone hack your account?”
I sent back a smiley face.
“No. Just for your information, Lorenzo is yours.”
Then I blocked her.
This triangle worked fine now. I wanted the title of the Don’s wife and the unlimited black card. If Elena wanted Lorenzo’s heart and his body, she could have them.
Not like last time, when I was stupid enough to want all of him for myself.
After dealing with Elena, I tried to sleep.
But even reborn, I still couldn’t rest easy.
Just like when I had cancer in my past life, I kept dreaming of the past.
When we were young, Lorenzo was quiet and withdrawn. His father, the previous Don, was harsh on him.
Late at night, after I’d already been asleep, I could still hear the whip from the training ground across the yard. Every time Lorenzo failed a combat drill, he’d get hit with a steel whip.
I lived across from him back then. I always thought he was so pitiful.
So whenever I got candy, I’d sneak it into the pocket of his coat, which hung outside his door. I’d leave a note. “Have one when it hurts.”
