Chapter 6
Evan dropped to his knees in the hospital hallway.
His phone had fallen to the floor beside him, the recording still playing on its own.
The woman’s breathy moans and his own ragged, out–of–control breathing sounded especially harsh in the stillness of
the corridor.
Once, he had pointed at the door and thrown Sloane out.
He had sworn that if she ever ended up in his hands, he would make sure she paid.
And yet, during his episode, he had kept her behind him, protecting her.
He remembered the way Tessa had looked at him when she was forced down onto the gravel.
There had been no tears.
There had been no anger.
There had only been dead silence and stubborn defiance.
Evan scrambled to his feet like a madman and bolted for the parking garage.
He drove at top speed, ran countiess red lights, and raced back to their apartment.
The front door was wide open.
Her shoes were gone from the entryway.
Half the clothes in the bedroom closet were gone.

No one knew where she had gone.
Then his assistant called, panic obvious in his voice. “Mr. Holt, public opinion online is completely out of control. The story about Miss Shaw being the other woman is dominating every trending feed, and the company’s stock is crashing. Miss Shaw was threatening suicide again in her room just now. She said you stopped caring about her…”
‘Let her die.”
Evan’s voice was hoarse and utterly flat.
His assistant went silent.
“Put people outside her room and keep her under watch. She does not leave this hospital without my permission.”
Evan’s eyes were bloodshot.
“Get me the best legal team money can buy. I’m suing her. Extortion, fraud, corporate misconduct. I don’t care what we call it. I want her to spit back every last thing she took from me during these seven days, with interest. I want her to spend the rest of her life in prison.”
After hanging up, Evan went back into the hospital.
He pulled up the surveillance footage.
On the screen, Tessa’s face was deathly pale as she walked out through the hospital doors, her steps weak and unsteady.
Then she got into a cab.
Evan tracked the license plate and followed it all the way to the airport.
By the time he got there, Tessa’s flight had already taken off for a country on the other side of the ocean.
Evan stood before the massive floor–to–ceiling windows, staring out into the black night sky
He knew then that he had lost her for good.
She had given him ten chances.
He had used every one of them up.
With his own hands, he had pushed her into an endless abyss.
And in doing so, he had sentenced himself to death
