Chapter 6Â
Valentina got carried away with her triumph.Â
She spun around and shoved Luca and Adrian out of Elena’s room.Â
“Elena’s just off traveling to clear her head. What could possibly happen to her?”Â
“The real problem is I’m missing a maid of honor now. You two have to find me a replacement rightÂ
now.”Â
Valentina planted her hands on her hips, barking orders like she owned the entire Moretti estateÂ
“She has to look at least eighty percent like Elena.”Â
The rest of the family exchanged bewildered looks at her demand. But spoiling her had become second nature. So, bewildered as they were, they complied.Â
While they scrambled to find Valentina a lookalike, I landed overseas.Â
Once the death certificate went through, I paid to have a brand new legal identity created. I named myself Aurora. It meant dawn. A fresh start.Â
My acceptance letter had been torn to shreds. But the knowledge in my head hadn’t disappeared with it. If I’d gotten in once, I could get in again.Â
So I threw myself back into my studies, working around the clock, Hard work paid off. I got my acceptance letter again.Â
Orientation day was the happiest day of my life. Until I saw Adrian De Luca standing at the campusÂ
gates.Â
My smile vanished instantly. I turned and walked away, my face cold, like I hadn’t seen him at all.Â
Adrian ran after me, desperate.Â
“Elena! Wait! Don’t go!”Â
He caught up to me in three long strides and blocked my path. He stared at my face, drinking in every feature like he’d never see me again.Â
I looked back at him, calm and distant.Â
“I’m sorry, sir. You have the wrong person.”Â

Elena Moretti died the day she left the Moretti estate. The woman standing here now is Aurora. I’m starting over. I buried everything that had to do with Elena Moretti. I won’t waste another second on the people or the past I left behind.Â
I tried to step around him, but he grabbed my arm. His voice was tight, almost manic.Â
“No. I could never mistake you for anyone else. You’re Elena. I know you are.’Â
“I’ve known you were here for months. But Luca forbade me to come. He said we’d only ruin the new life you built, drag you back into our chaos. But I couldn’t stay away.”Â
Adrian poured everything out, words tumbling over each other. That’s how I found out his wedding to Valentina had been called off.Â
He told me that after I left, everyone had started to notice something off about Valentina. SheÂ
wasn’t the same.Â
It happened one ordinary afternoon, after they’d moved in together before the wedding. Adrian had been working for twelve hours straight, interviewing lookalikes for Valentina’s maid of honor. He came home early, exhausted, and overheard Valentina on the phone with her former doctor.Â
“I know you want the Moretti and De Luca fortunes, but what’s the rush? Luca and Adrian do everything I say now. You’ll get your money. Relax.”Â
“And the lookalike? It’s just for fun. I only faked the coma because I didn’t want to get sent to that boarding school and learn all those stupid family rules. But Elena got to live my life for all those years. She got everything that should’ve been mine. Watching that copy of me look humiliated and miserable? It makes me happy.”Â
Adrian had frozen in the doorway, unable to believe what he was hearing. Her words had poisoned everything he’d ever believed about her.Â
The whole thing blew up. It eventually reached the ears of Don Lorenzo and Donna Marisa.Â
