Chapter 118 Disturb Who?

Lawrence tilted his head and looked at Thomas. At last, a slight flicker appeared in those hollow eyes.

“Thank you. You finally acted like a human being for once today.”

Receiving that kind of praise from his own son did not feel good at all.

Thomas’s head began to ache faintly. The joy he had felt moments ago had been doused with a bucket of cold water, leaving nothing but bone-deep chill and helplessness.

Lawrence had his own channels, his own people he could use. Perhaps there were quite a few people in the house, and even in the company, who had already been bought over by him.

Otherwise, how had he known what Thomas planned to do next? How had he known when Thomas got the paternity test?

Logically speaking, a son who was smart and bold should have made any father proud from those two qualities alone.

But when Thomas saw those methods of pressure and surveillance, the kind meant for outsiders, being used on him instead, his heart sank to the bottom.

He no longer doubted that with Lawrence’s extreme personality, if no one stopped him, he really would destroy his own face.

Thomas still cared deeply about this son. Even if the boy had grown covered in thorns, the bond built over years of father and son was real.

And besides, that was the child his late wife had left him, the continuation of their bloodline.

The standoff between father and son carried not even a trace of warmth.

Lawrence lowered his head and looked at the knife in his hand. Blood still stained the blade, glowing an eerie red under the light.

Once again, he could not help remembering the past.

“Your personality is too extreme. You’ll only end up hurting yourself like this.” To be fair, his sister had always judged people accurately.

At the time, he had been thirteen and in his rebellious phase. He had asked back in a poor tone, “If I’m not extreme, who’s going to care about us? Should I become some stress toy everyone can squeeze whenever they feel like it?”

He refused to be a stress toy.

Maya had burst out laughing at the comparison. “Of course we’re not stress toys. It’ll be better when we grow up. Once we’re older, things definitely won’t always stay like this.”

Between the siblings, Maya had always been the optimistic one.

The one with the terrible temper had always been him.

Chapter 118 Disturb Who?

Lawrence expressionlessly tightened his grip on the knife.

He had thought about being softer too, about restraining his temper.

But who could blame him for being only six years old now?

If he was not extreme enough, no one would listen to what a child said.

Silence followed.

While father and son were still in that tense negotiation, Kaia was playing hide-and-seek with the housekeeper around the corner of the hallway.

Whenever they played, she liked hiding in her father’s study the most, nestling into Thomas’s arms and acting spoiled.

Thomas would indulgently wrap her in his coat and help her hide.

She had barged into Thomas’s study more than once.

After all, between father and daughter, it was not like there was such a thing as intruding.

When she spotted Lawrence standing outside the study, her eyes lit up slightly.

By now, she had already forgiven him for being rude to her before.

Kaia had an outgoing personality. As long as someone treated her a little nicely, she forgot everything.

Standing on tiptoe, she moved lightly and quietly, just about to sneak behind him and surprise him when…

The next second, she saw Lawrence pull out a knife and press it against his face.

He stood outside the study, while Thomas was inside.

The two were separated by the open study door.

Lawrence’s expression was cold. He seemed to notice her, but quickly looked away.

Kaia’s movement paused slightly.

The conversation that followed only confused her even more.

“You can’t disturb her.”

Disturb who?

“I won’t go find her.”

Find what? What were they looking for?

Full of confusion, Kaia held a hand puppet and skipped forward, speaking brightly. “Dad, what are you talking about? Can you tell me?”

Kaia’s eyes were clear and innocent.

She knew nothing of the world.

The malice Lawrence had only just managed to suppress surged up again.

Thomas frowned, not knowing how to answer for a moment.

“Do you really want to know?” Lawrence suddenly turned his head and looked at Kaia. His voice sounded childishly innocent, like a good little brother concerned for his sister.

“Lawrence!”

Thomas’s expression darkened.

He still had not figured out how to handle the situation with these children, how to comfort Kaia, or how to bring the other child back.

He had not expected Kaia to dramatically appear in front of him herself.

And now she was innocently asking what was going on.

“Why are you calling my name again? Showing off how loud your voice is?” Lawrence spoke coldly without even turning back toward him. “Dad, you’re still the same. Always trying to please both sides. Even now, you still foolishly think everyone can get along peacefully? Want to know what we were talking about? I’ll tell you.”

The smile on his face vanished completely.

Even though he was only six, there was something ghostly and chilling about him.

Lawrence picked up the paternity test from the desk and held it out in front of Kaia. The corner of his mouth lifted as he asked pleasantly, “Can you read?”
