Chapter 123 Hard to ReadÂ
Is she going to kill me?Â
If it had come to this… didn’t that mean she actually cared about Maya?Â
Lawrence kept silent.Â

Wendy lowered her gaze, studying the boy in front of her without a word. Then, slowly, her fingers eased, the pressure around his throat fading as she let go.Â
She had only meant to scare him.Â
Wendy had never been driven by anything grand. No big dreams, no hunger for power-just the simple hope of a quiet, steady home.Â
When she was young, she’d been completely alone, drifting through life like something untethered, carried wherever the current took her. Nothing to anchor her.Â
No roots. Nowhere to belong. She never knew where she’d end up next—or if she’d even make it that far.Â
Only a family could make her feel grounded.Â
So even if she could’ve gotten away with it, she’d never risk hurting this kid.Â
Even if he was annoying as hell.Â
“You should head home,” Wendy said, letting him go and giving his forehead a light tap. Her voice softened. “I don’t get you. You’ve probably never even met Maya, right? And you still came all this way just to pick a fight with me–for a sister you’ve never seen…” She let out a quiet breath. “You’re a good kid.”Â
Lawrence looked adorable.Â
But clearly, he was one of those unsettling kids.Â
Seriously, someone needed to get him already!Â
He hadn’t expected her to let him off that easily. He reached up and brushed his fingers over his neck. After a brief blink, something seemed to click, and the faintest hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.Â
Wendy wasn’t the type to feel sorry for children.Â
Her intent to kill had been real-but she’d still pulled back.Â
At last, the pressure in Lawrence’s chest eased.Â
“I’m sorry, ma’am.”Â
His expression softened, his voice turning gentle, as if the earlier provocation had never happened. “I won’t bother your family again. You don’t need to worry.”Â
Wendy frowned, a quiet, puzzled “Huh?” slipping out.Â

Chapter 123 Hard to ReadÂ
What was that supposed to mean?Â

A moment later, she turned and watched him hurry off. His small figure slipped into the busy street and was quickly swallowed by the crowd, gone without a trace.Â
Wendy stayed where she was, lost in thought for a long moment.Â
“What a strange kid.” Her voice was so quiet that only she could hear it.Â
Just like Maya-hard to read.Â
In Maya’s class, there were always a few kids everyone found annoying-the kind who just liked to stir things up.Â
Vincent Burnett was the perfect example.Â
He liked to go around cracking harmless jokes. Some classmates found him irritating, others played along.Â
But these two siblings? No matter what he tried, he couldn’t get a reaction out of them.Â
From start to finish, neither of them gave him so much as a flicker of surprise.Â
Earlier, when Maya and Alfred’s essays were posted on the board, he’d teased them nonstop.Â
He leaned in with that smug grin, tossing out lines like, “So your mom’s packing a freakin’ machine gun?” and “Your dad really got kicked out of the family, huh?” The only response he got was both siblings turning to look at him at the same time, completely expressionless.Â
Two pairs of eyes, fixed on him. Not a word.Â
Honestly… it was kind of creepy.Â
Vincent had awkwardly shrunk back then and behaved himself for a few days.Â
But a jerk’s nature doesn’t change.Â
Today, he was at it again.Â
A paper airplane came sailing in from behind, striking Maya square in the forehead with uncanny precision.Â
She didn’t even glance at it. Casually, she crushed it in her hand, then lifted her head, her amber eyes locking onto the culprit.Â
“You’re annoying.Â
“You’re annoying, Vincent.” She even called his name.Â
“You actually know my name?” Vincent looked genuinely surprised. “I figured you two wouldn’t even remember who we are after all this time.”Â
Those two always kept to themselves.Â
If it weren’t for Jenny-who didn’t have any friends either and just stuck with them-the siblings would’ve practically shut the rest of the class out without even trying.Â

They never joined group activities. Anyone who tried to be nice just got ignored.”Â
Vincent thought it was cool.Â
Still, he couldn’t figure out why they insisted on keeping to themselves.Â
Maya frowned. “I’m not an idiot.”Â
“Then why don’t you hang out with us?” he said with a grin. “It’s not like making friends will kill you.”Â
Maya gave him a wary look. “You want to be my friend?”Â
In this class, just about everyone was friends with Kaia.Â
She had no interest in making new ones out of nowhere.Â
“Yeah, yeah! Can I?” Vincent’s eyes lit up. To him, the most mysterious people in class were those two siblings.Â
At the parent-teacher meeting, their dad had come off like a background extra, which made everyone assume he was a butler or something.Â
A background check didn’t turn up anything unusual about their family.Â
The strange part was that anyone who messed with them somehow ended up getting expelled-no one really knew why.Â
It was just… strange.Â
In the end, the whole class reached an unspoken agreement, stay away from them.Â
Being around those siblings felt like bad luck waiting to happen.Â
And yet Vincent was exactly the kind of person who couldn’t help himself-curious, reckless, always poking at things he should’ve left alone.Â
Maya didn’t hold back at all. “You’re only fit to be someone’s lackey.”Â
Being friends with him? Not happening.Â
The guy was seriously the worst.Â
