Chapter 149 The Cuckoo and the RoseÂ
Maya stared at her.Â
Her first thought was that Kaia meant Raymond, and the answer was instant. “Obviously not.”Â
Who just hands over a dad?Â
What kind of logic was this?Â

Kaia bit her lip, eyes going red. “Why not? He and I have been together for years. You two don’t even know each other. Giving him to me wouldn’t cost you anything.Â
“Besides, you already have a new family. I don’t. I don’t have birth parents. All I have is him.Â
“He’s loved me the most since I was little. He told me that no matter what happened, even if I was in danger. he’d do anything to protect me.”Â
Kaia went on and on, pouring out everything Thomas had done for her, completely oblivious to how devastating those words would be if the girl sitting across from her actually craved a father’s love.Â
It took Maya a beat to realize Kaia was talking about Thomas, not Raymond.Â
She thought back to the school banquet and how Thomas had acted. He really had moved to shield Kaia on instinct when things got dangerous.Â
Funny how that worked. No blood relation, and they still mattered to each other.Â
Maya looked at her and said, “Whatever’s going on between you and Thomas is between you and him. Why are you coming to me?Â
“And if I’m not wrong, I’m his actual daughter. So where do you get off saying I’ve got ‘nothing to lose’?”Â
Her tone stayed level. She ignored Kaia’s pale face. “You got everything handed to you, and now you’re sitting here guilt-tripping me about it. That’s honestly disgusting.”Â
Maya had no playbook for someone like Kaia. Too dumb to be truly evil. Too dangerous to be truly dumb.Â
Kaia had never been called disgusting to her face before. She lost it. Tears spilled down her cheeks.Â
But the classmates who noticed just looked away and went right back to their conversations.Â
When no one came to comfort her, the tears dried up on their own.Â
Facing Maya’s cold indifference, Kaia clenched her fists, her voice small and shaky. “So… so are you planning to come back?”Â
Kaia had no idea when Maya had learned the truth. All she could do now was silently pray that Maya wouldn’t come back.Â
Maya had zero interest in going back. But she didn’t answer. She just looked at Kaia.Â
Watched the panic spread across her face in real time.Â

Seconds ticked by. Kaia’s fingernails dug unconsciously into her palms. Reading Maya’s expression, she bit down hard and the words tumbled out before she could stop them.Â
“If I were ever in danger, Dad would save me first. No matter what it’ll cost him.”Â
This time, she was showing off on purpose to try to hurt Maya.Â
Kaia looked at her. “Can you say the same about your father? Are you sure he’d do that for you?”Â
Raymond had always been hard for Maya to read. She knew nothing about his past. His temper never ran hot or cold. His personality was as bland as tap water.Â
If she was actually in danger… He’d probably barely react.Â
Someone who’d been a leader, someone used to command, would default to cold, calculated calm.Â
Then again, no reaction didn’t mean he wouldn’t come through.Â
Maya didn’t want to waste another second on this conversation. She gave Kaja a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Kaia, don’t push me. Because tomorrow, the entire school might find out you’re the fake who stole someone else’s spot.Â
“From now on, I don’t want to see your face anywhere near me for longer than ten seconds. Got it?”Â
Kaia opened her mouth to say something, but Maya had already started counting. “Ten. Nine. Eight…”Â
Kaia let out a yelp, properly spooked, and scurried back to her seat, sniffling the whole way.Â
Peace at last.Â
Maya put her head back down on the desk.Â
She didn’t used to be like this. But spending so much time around Toby had rubbed off on her.Â
Toby’s philosophy toward other people had always been straightforward. Anyone above him should drop dead. Anyone beneath him didn’t deserve to breathe.Â
A true role model. Worth studying.Â
Truly inspirational stuff.Â
Later that day, George plucked a flower from the school garden and gave it to the only woman on the task force.Â
She glanced at him, smiled, and accepted it without comment. Easy-going as always.Â
George, encouraged, picked another flower. This one was for Toby.Â
He ambushed Toby outside his classroom, placed the flower in his hand, and leaned down with an air of supreme self-satisfaction. “For you. Long time no see. Miss me?”Â
He grinned. That pretty, doll-like face of his looked extremely punchable.Â

Toby stared at the wilted pink rose in his hand. Two seconds of silence. Then he ripped every petal off and threw them in George’s face.Â
“Take your pathetic flower and get out of my sight.”Â
Shot down and cursed out in one go, but George, generous soul that he was, didn’t hold it against him.Â
