Chapter 152 Run, Hide, Survive

For now, they couldn’t pull off extortion inside the school. Doing it off campus would draw less attention and cause fewer problems.
“What about the kid who got away? Not all of us are here yet. What if she screws things up?”
“Relax. Leave her to me,” another man said coldly, rubbing his wrist, which was still numb. “Once I catch her, I’ll deal with her first.”
Maya cut around a corner and darted off in a different direction.
She knew the school layout well.
Maya had studied here for a while and spent plenty of time wandering the campus.
She had a decent sense of where the layout got tricky and where she could hide.
Behind her, the sound of footsteps grew closer and closer.
An adult could easily outrun a child.
And the area near the principal’s office was wide open, with almost no cover at all. Anyone standing there could see everything in one glance.
The man chased after her at full speed.
He was fast.
But Maya was faster.
He couldn’t make sense of it.
How could that kid run like this fast?
Her short legs moved so quickly they looked almost mechanical, and what shocked him even more was her stamina.
She didn’t seem tired at all.
He, on the other hand, was already running out of breath.
When Maya reached the lake, she slowed for a brief moment.

She hesitated, her mind racing.
Should she just jump in?
:
The system’s voice suddenly echoed in her head.
“I advise against it. Chance of death: 100%.”
Maya paused and forced herself to calm down.
Truthfully, she wasn’t that afraid.
At worst, she could reload and start over.
But she clearly remembered the system’s warning.
Reloading carried a risk of being thrown into a random timeline.
The unknown was far more frightening than death itself.
Finsned
Maya stopped in her tracks and quickly gave up on the idea. She turned and sprinted toward the garden.
The school garden was filled with expensive flowers and dense trees, their thick growth making it an ideal place to hide.
She didn’t expect to run straight into someone.
George was busy trimming flowers.
He stood out immediately-tall, holding a large bundle of flowers in one arm while gripping a pair of shears in the other. Petals had fallen all around his feet, red, pink, and white, spreading across the ground like a soft, colorful carpet.
When he heard the noise, he let out a quiet grunt and turned his head.
Then he spotted a familiar figure.
A dark blue uniform, a bouncing ponytail, and a pair of short legs moving at full speed.
Someone he knew.
George’s face lit up with a bright smile as he greeted her in a cheerful tone.
“Hey, Maya.”

Maya, breathing hard, skidded to a sudden stop.
She saw him and the shears in his hand, flashing under the sunlight.
Her mind stopped working for a second before she grabbed his sleeve tightly.
“There’s a bad guy!” she shouted in a rush. “Help me, teacher!”
George blinked in surprise.
He glanced toward the direction Maya had come from.
A man was running toward them, panting, his face twisted.
Maya grabbed George’s hand tight and hid behind him.
Of course, she didn’t expect this strange guy to actually help her.
She only wanted to drag this homeless guy into the situation and create confusion. Calling him “teacher” over and over was part of the act.
That plan would only work if those two didn’t recognize each other.
Luckily, she guessed right.
Those two didn’t know each other.
George rarely interacted with his father’s subordinates. There were too many people involved in this operation for everyone to recognize each other.
He lowered his gaze to the small hand gripping his sleeve.
Then he looked up at the man chasing her.
A smile curved on his lips.
“Hey,” he said casually, his tone relaxed. “Morning. You guys playing some new kind of survival game?”
George guessed that man was part of the same operation.
But he didn’t care. Team loyalty meant nothing to him.
Maya stayed hidden behind him, pretending to tremble in fear, secretly hoping the two criminals would end up fighting each other.

Although, to be honest, she knew there was a higher chance she’d be the one getting hurt.
Still, she had no way out now. This was her last gamble.
“Is she your student?” the man asked, clearly not recognizing George and assuming he was a teacher. He looked puzzled. “Missed one, huh? You’re pretty good at hiding.”
His expression darkened as he spoke.
“So you stirred up trouble and then came running to me for help? You’re such a naughty girl, Maya,” George said, catching on. He didn’t react much beyond a light complaint. Then he handed her the bouquet in his arms. “Hold this for me. Stay here and wait.”
He lifted the shears in his hand. The smile on his face faded completely.
