George actually stopped and thought back on his short time in jail. His thoughts drifted off track right away.

He muttered, “Yeah, I guess so. I never had to use a sewing machine, though. On the first day, they made me get up early, eat fast, and go to work. And the food? It was terrible.”

Maya blinked. “Wait. You’ve really been to jail?!”

George didn’t feel embarrassed at all. “Of course.”

Edric had been the one who put him there himself.

Maya couldn’t help it; her voice carried a bit of awe. “Wow, that’s… kind of amazing.”

He really was something else.

Strangely enough, that odd little conversation made George lose interest in killing her.

He glanced at the time on his phone. It was about right. The flowers had been delivered. Time to get to business, like kidnapping his younger brother.

“Bye, bye,” George said, waving lazily. “Hope to see you again, Maya.”

Just don’t die here.

Feeling the danger fade, Maya finally relaxed a little. She gave a small wave back and thanked him politely. “Thank you, teacher.”

The second she turned around, her smile disappeared.

Deep down, she prayed she would never see that murderer ever again.

Maya didn’t dare go back the way she came. Even an idiot could tell something was wrong now. Jenny was missing. She didn’t know where those people had taken her.

And Alfred…

The campus was quiet. Too quiet. The empty space made it feel worse. Suddenly, a man’s voice came over the loudspeaker.

Flat. Cold. No emotion at all.

“Students, please assemble on the rooftop.”

It repeated three times.

Maya froze mid-step.

She was stunned.

They aren’t even trying to keep a low profile now?

The rooftop? Assemble? Is this some kind of joke?

If they asked the student to assemble in the football field, she might believe it.

But the rooftop?

A bunch of students stuck up there would have nowhere to run.

Were they planning to trap everyone at once?

Because of the announcement, students had already started coming out. Voices echoed through the halls as people talked.

“Why are we going to the rooftop?”

“Maybe they’ve got something to announce.”

“Where’s our teacher? Why are they announcing this over a broadcast?”

“No idea. Let’s check it out.”

But not everyone followed the order.

Some students stayed in their classrooms. Others wandered around in small groups.

Anyone who went to the rooftop was walking straight into a trap.

Maya went back to the classroom and looked around. Alfred wasn’t there. She didn’t waste any time, turned around, and ran straight for the lockers.

She yanked hers open, felt around inside, and finally found what she had hidden there—a stun baton.

She had planned to use it on that creepy homeless guy before. But thinking about the size and age difference, she’d given up. It would’ve been asking for trouble.

She never thought she’d get another chance to use it.

In the end, all her thoughts turned into one simple act of gratitude.

Thanks to Alfred for his sponsorship. Thanks to that homeless guy for keeping her alert.

Thanks to… well, everyone.

With that strange sense of thankfulness, Maya gripped the baton and ran as fast as she could.

As she sprinted down the hallway, she quickly spotted a familiar figure.

Finally, someone she knew. “Phoebe!” she called out without hesitation.

Phoebe turned around, surprised. “Maya?”

“Have you seen my brother?” Maya asked, speaking fast.

Phoebe shook her head.

“Alfred? I didn’t really notice.” She looked lost, almost panicked. “What’s going on at school? The announcement said we should gather on the rooftop. Are we supposed to go?”

“Don’t ask me. I have no idea,” Maya said.

Right now, trying to find a way to leave the campus is pointless. These people had clearly planned everything. If they tried to leave, they’d probably walk straight into a trap.

Phoebe hurried after her. “Maya, where are we going?”

Maya didn’t stop her. Everyone could make their own choices. If Phoebe wanted to follow, fine. In time of crisis, everyone needs to look out for themselves anyway.

“I don’t know. Let’s hide for now,” Maya said. “Things are too messy. I can’t figure things out for now. What about our classmates?”

“A lot of them went out to hang around,” Phoebe said, uneasy. “Some went to the roof. What should we do?”

About half the students had gone up to the roof. The rest either didn’t feel like moving or just ignored the announcement completely.

“Stay away from any adults and find a place to hide,” Maya said. “If you see anyone who looks like school security, run right away. They’re the bad guys.”

Strangely, Maya was calm at a time like this. Phoebe finally seemed to find something to hold on to. She nodded hard and said in a small voice, “Okay. I will.”
