Chapter 166 Calm Before the Bloodstorm

Jenny only noticed now. Before, Raymond always wore black-framed glasses with a simple white shirt, looking quiet and easy to overlook.

But now that she thought about it, Raymond had always been a good-looking man.

He had a straight nose and soft features. His eyes were calm, almost gentle, and his slightly wavy hair gave him a harmless air, like someone easy to push around.

Now, he felt like a completely different person. His hair was brushed back neatly, and the black coat added weight to his presence. His eyes had turned sharp, carrying a cold edge they never had before. With his height on top of that, he looked like a god on earth. He didn’t feel like the same man at all.

From now on, she would never again call Raymond a useless man who just slept all day.

Raymond didn’t spare her a glance.

Every signal in the area had been cut off. The kidnappers could still contact the outside world because they had skilled tech people supporting them.

For Raymond, reaching out wasn’t difficult either.

But after years of dealing with law enforcement and special units, he understood how slow they were. By the time they arrived and began negotiations, everyone here would likely be dead.

He didn’t call the police. Instead, he kept walking and dialed a number.

The phone rang for a long time before it was finally answered.

Raymond didn’t waste time. “Lend me some people.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

“For what?” The voice was cold. “I thought after you got together with Wendy, you wouldn’t call me ever again.”

Raymond replied steadily, “I need to clear out some useless ex-colleagues.”

He muttered to himself, almost like a quiet conclusion. “Yeah, once you have a family, you really should cut off ex-colleagues. Keeps things from messing up your home life.”

For most people, that just meant deleting contacts.

For Raymond, it meant getting rid of those people for real.

“How many do you need?” He clearly didn’t want to lend anyone or get involved. But he couldn’t stay out of it.

This was the first time Raymond had reached out in ten years. In the end, he swallowed his irritation and decided to hear him out.

Raymond asked calmly, “How about a thousand? Harmony International School is pretty big.”

“Not a chance. Are you crazy?”

“Then I’ll settle for 700.” Raymond didn’t raise his voice. “If the old man asks, I’ll go explain myself. I still have the authority to move people around, don’t I?”

Strictly speaking, he was the rightful heir.

The voice on the other end tightenĂ©d, almost grinding through his teeth. “Fine. Then you can explain it to Dad yourself. If he finds out you mobilized 700 people for one kid with no value but trouble, you really think he’ll let it slide?”

Raymond let out a helpless sigh. “I don’t want to do this. The problem is, I don’t have anyone left.”

The few people he used to command had become the enemies holding his daughter hostage.

Raymond truly felt how serious things had become.

All these years, he had focused on killing, not building connections. And now, when he finally needed help, he didn’t have a single reliable person left to use.

“Can you help me out, Ned?”

“Help you?” Ned Clark snapped, clearly annoyed. “What else do you want from me? I already gave you 700 men. What now? You want me to kill someone in front of everyone for her?”

“That depends,” Raymond said after a short pause. “If I have a choice, I’d rather not kill anyone in public.”

He wasn’t a messiah. He had no plans to save everyone here.

He only wanted Maya.

After a few more words, Raymond made it clear he wanted all 700 people before he hung up.

Jenny followed behind him, too scared to speak.

She had heard the whole call.

Worse, she had seen how Raymond treated people he knew.

Those kidnappers had been calling him “boss” one second. The next second, they were killed tragically.

Jenny felt like she was going to die.

If Raymond could take out his old contacts without second thought, what chance did she have after hearing all that?

Her legs went weak. She didn’t know what to do.

“You can hide,” Raymond said, glancing back at her for once. “Staying with me isn’t safe.”

He had no reason to protect her.

And he was about to walk straight into the kidnappers’ base.

If Jenny didn’t want to walk into danger with him, the best thing she could do was hide.

“Okay. Thank you, Mr. Clark. I’ll hide right away. I won’t get in your way,” Jenny said, almost in tears with relief.

“We’re all going to die.”

The control room was packed with hostages.

Boys were crying. Girls were crying too.

It was complete chaos.

“I wonder how much ransom my dad will pay.”

“I don’t want to die.”

“What do we do, Maya?” Maya was probably the only one not crying. She didn’t give up, either. She even had the energy to call out and chat with the kidnappers now and then, like she was bored.

Her composure was so steady, beyond ordinary human beings.
