Chapter 193 A Favor Denied 

“Have you lost your minds?” 

Two of Edric’s brothers were wrestling on the floor. 

George and Toby had their hands on each other’s heads, each trying to shove the other face- first into the ground. 

When the lab door suddenly opened, George’s cocky attitude vanished on the spot. 

Toby’s dark expression softened right away. He stood up and brushed off his knees, even though there was no dust there. “Edric.” 

Alfred also got up and called out politely, “Edric.” 

Under the bright lab lights, Edric’s face looked pale, almost too bright to look at. 

He ignored the way they were suddenly acting well-behaved. Instead, he looked down at George, who was still sitting on the floor. His expression was flat. 

“Get up,” he said. 

George leaned back slightly, his hands braced behind him. He tilted his head up to look at Edric. 

“No. You need to do me a favor.” 

Edric leaned against the doorframe. His posture wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t lazy either. He just stood there, eyes lowered, a faint curve at the corner of his mouth. 

He found it a little funny. 

“Why should I?” 

To him, his relationship with these brothers felt like old classmates he hadn’t spoken to in years. These people only showed up when they needed money. 

He stopped paying attention to George and shifted his gaze to Toby instead. “And you? What are you here for?” 

He didn’t remember having much to do with his third brother. 

Compared to George, who was always causing trouble, Toby had always been the easy one. 

“Edric.” Toby paused for a moment, then put on a calm, polite expression, like he was chatting

with an old friend. “Do you know Maya?” 

In truth, he wasn’t close to Edric at all.

Edric looked at him and said nothing. 

So Toby kept going. “She’s with Grandpa right now. Mom misses her a lot. Can you bring her home?”

“Maya?” Edric searched his memory for something unimportant. His voice stayed calm, empty of emotion. “The orphan?” 

He paused, then added lightly, “Or the poor kid?” 

Toby’s polite smile froze for a split second. Then he corrected him slowly, “She’s not.” 

He glared at him, and his voice hardened, “She’s my sister.” 

“I didn’t mean to insult her,” Edric said. He straightened up and walked past him. As he passed Toby, his voice drifted down, calm and distant. 

“But you’ve probably used those exact words on her before. What? You get to say them, but I can’t?” 

The pale lab lights made his face look even colder, sharper. 

He reached out and lightly tapped Toby’s shoulder, then pulled his hand back. 

“Do you regret talking to her like that now? Next time you mention Maya, try to keep your emotions in check. Alright?” 

With Toby’s sharp, mean personality, Edric could easily guess what kind of words he used on a girl he barely knew. 

Caught off guard, Toby’s breathing hitched. 

Edric had shut him down. 

“You really haven’t changed,” Edric went on. “When you like someone, you want them to live. When you hate someone, you want them gone. The world doesn’t revolve around you, Toby.” 

After that, Toby had nothing to say. He frowned slightly. 

He really didn’t understand Edric.

At home, the one he liked the most was Alfred. The one he knew best was George, since they’d grown up fighting each other. 

So this is what Edric is really like? 

Sharp and mean. 

Edric turned his gaze to George. 

The moment George felt the weight of his look, his shoulders tightened without thinking. His toes slid back half an inch. 

A clear defensive reaction. 

Edric simply looked at him for a while. His gaze paused, then moved away, saying nothing. 

George blinked. “Huh?” 

He waited for a while. When nothing came, he couldn’t help asking in a small voice, “What about me? Aren’t you going to say anything to me?” 

There was a hint of unfairness in his tone. Like, why didn’t he get a lecture? 

Edric didn’t even turn around. 

“You?” 

He dragged out the word, sounding casual and a little bored. 

Then he said, calm as ever, “Go find something else to do.” 

George was dazed. 

What did that even mean? 

Am I some kid that he just brush away? 

Alfred looked at Edric coldly. 

He wasn’t afraid of him. 

Edric lowered his head and looked at him too. 

The youngest brother. 

Quiet most of the time. Smart. Needed neither company nor comfort. Never caused trouble.
