Chapter 221 Good PeopleÂ
Meanwhile, people like George-people who did bad things-drove nice cars, lived in nice places, and threw around tens of thousands like it was pocket change.Â
How was that fair?Â
Liam kept his head down, his face drained of color, his voice scraped out of his throat. “Don’t you people ever feel ashamed?”Â
George gave a vague hum, but his attention was elsewhere. He was watching Maya, trying to figure out where she’d picked up that tone.Â
Toby?Â
Yeah. That was it.Â
The way she tilted her chin up, that slow, deliberate cadence, words dropping one by one like she had all the time in the world. She was a miniature Toby. And he had to admit, her brand of disdain was infuriating. Liam’s eyes were turning red.Â
“Ashamed?” Maya stretched her hand out between them, palm up, her voice flat and cold. “You owe my brother money and you’re not ashamed. Why should I be? Go ahead. Pay him back right now if you can.”Â
Liam’s jaw dropped. He’d thought what came before was harsh. He was wrong.Â
The flush spread from his ears down his neck and across his entire face. His mouth opened, then closed. It took him a long time to push out a reply.Â
“I can’t. I’ll get it to you. Soon.”Â
“Oh, you can’t?” Maya drew the words out long and sweet, her voice lifting at the end with the smugness of a kid who’d just won an argument she had no business being in. “Big talk, zero follow-through. That’s all you’ve got.”Â
Liam’s face went through another cycle of colors. His hands were shaking, though whether from anger or something else, it was hard to tell.Â
He turned to George, a note of desperation creeping in. “George. Your sister is out of line.”Â
George lay slumped over the table, face buried in his arms, only his eyes visible. They were amber in the dim light, bright and gleaming with something that looked suspiciously like amusement.Â
He thought she was adorable right now. He’d never seen this side of Maya before. When Liam’s plea for help reached him, he blinked slowly, then answered in a lazy drawl. “Kids say the darndest things. Why are you arguing with a child?”Â
Liam sputtered. “She’s saying the darndest things?”Â
The girl’s logic was razor-sharp, her arguments came in waves, and not a single word was random. What part of that was innocent childish rambling?Â
He opened his mouth to fight back, but Maya was done listening. She hopped off the bar stool, grabbedÂ

George’s sleeve, and hauled him toward the door.Â
George stumbled, his drink nearly sloshing over the rim. He set it down quickly. “You wanna leave? Let me get the check first.”Â
“Don’t you dare.”Â
Maya yanked his sleeve harder. This idiot. He’d sat through a whole sermon and now he wanted to pay for the privilege?Â
She hoped she’d find a pushover friend like this someday.Â
She dragged him bodily toward the exit with a strength that genuinely surprised him.Â
Without looking back, she tossed one last line over her shoulder. “Let Liam get it. Isn’t he a good person? Good people love picking up the tab.”Â
Liam sat alone in the booth, watching the two of them walk away. After a long moment, he bit down hard on his lip and pulled out his phone.Â
“How’s the plan coming? It’s been long enough. Have you figured out when they’re making their move or not? Talk.” The voice on the other end was cold, clipped, demanding.Â
Liam pressed his lips together. The heat in his face had started to fade. “Almost. I’ll cooperate with your plan.”Â
The caller’s tone softened a fraction. “I’ve told you from the start, violent criminals like that don’t deserve saving. I had you get close to him so we could take them all down at once, not so you could waste time trying to redeem him.”Â
“I don’t think he’s that bad of a person,” Liam said, hesitant. “We’ve known each other for a while now…”Â
“Stop. Save the useless sentiment. I don’t want to hear it. Your job is to make sure the plan is airtight. When the time comes, you get him out in the open, and we kill him. Understood?”Â
“…Yeah.”Â
The night air hit cool against their skin as they walked.Â
“Why is your friend so weird?” Maya frowned. “If my friends were like that, I’d never want another friend for the rest of my life.”Â
Sometimes she thought Toby and Alfred’s whole “friends are useless” philosophy had a point. Useful, and they’re called friends. Useless, and they’re enemies.Â
“That wasn’t friendship. That was like adopting a second father.”Â
And even Raymond never lectured them unprompted. Liam was more of a dad than their actual dad.Â
George walked beside her, slowing his pace to match hers.Â
“I don’t really want to hear all that ‘be a better person’ stuff.” His voice was quieter than usual. “It’s exhausting.”Â

Every time. Be good. Stop doing those things. Think about the future. He had thought about it. He’d thought about it over and over. And then what?Â
He was still him, and Liam was still Liam. Neither of them had changed the other.Â
“But he’s a decent enough guy, I guess?” George glanced over at Maya. “At least he’s one of the few people ! know who’s got the guts to stick around.”Â
That much was hard to argue with.Â
