Chapter 92 What Counts as LoveÂ
Maya had actually wanted to complain about his personality for a long time.Â
FindiedÂ
Why did Toby always assume people were trying to take something from him, and only then return it “equally”?Â
Did he really believe human relationships had no normal emotional bonds?Â
“Not that.” Toby’s voice started low, then suddenly rose, as if he had just realized something and got slightly irritated. “It’s not a transaction.”Â
“I just…”Â
Just…Â
“…want to treat you a little better.”Â
That was all.Â
No conditions. No expectation of return. Just that.Â
He looked at her, his dark eyes swirling with complicated emotions. In a barely audible voice, he added, “If you keep rejecting me… I feel like I have nothing at all when I’m in front of you….”Â
Everything he could offer could only be measured in value.Â
He did not understand what real feelings were, and he could not figure them out.Â
Emotional concepts had always been painfully lacking for him.Â
The boy sank back into the sofa, like he couldn’t face his own confession anymore.Â
Maya stared at him for a moment, then suddenly brightened. “You’re kind of clingy, aren’t you, Toby!”Â
Toby was a very strange person.Â
He was the type who would casually say something like, “Go hang out with him then, I don’t care. Just leave already.”Â
But the moment you actually turned around and left, he would immediately spiral, as if detonating on the spot, and say something like, “I’m going to die.”Â
“What?”Â
That word-clingy-had absolutely nothing to do with him.Â
“You’re really clingy!” she said again, laughing. “Good thing you’re not nice enough.”Â
“Otherwise you’d become one of those ‘perfect husband’ types.”Â
Toby was shocked.Â

That made even less sense.Â
“What exactly are they teaching you at school?” he asked, brows deeply furrowed, pure confusion in his darkÂ
eyes.Â
He hadn’t been paying much attention to her school life recently-mostly because he’d been dealing with psychotic George, who was constantly bothering him.Â
How did she suddenly start talking like this?Â
“I’m studying properly at school,” Maya said, dragging out her words. She slumped over the table. “I just read extracurricular books sometimes, but now they were all confiscated.”Â
She liked going to bookstores with Jenny.Â
She would buy those dramatic romance novels and read them just for fun.Â
But who would’ve thought?Â
She had only shown them off a little to Annie, and instead of praise, she got a stack of fashion magazines shoved into her hands.Â
Her precious dramatic literature was all gone!Â
She worked so hard to save up for those books!Â
“What books?” Toby asked.Â
Maya thought for a moment. “I forgot the titles. You can just search them online.”Â
So he actually tried. He typed in things like “captivity romance” and “forced relationship”.Â
Immediately, the screen filled with terms like “bondage,” “brother complex,” and “forced love.”Â
And they were all…Â
Toby asked, “What is this?”Â
He muttered it under his breath, then stared at it for two seconds.Â
Because he was genuinely curious about what she read, he clicked in.Â
And then, his face turned completely red.Â
What the heck?Â
He almost threw the phone away. Slamming the screen off, he looked up at Maya with a mix of shock, embarrassment, anger, and something disturbingly close to a father discovering his daughter reading inappropriate books.Â
Toby took a deep breath. “I’m going to fire your homeroom teacher.”Â
This had to be her teacher’s fault for not managing the class properly and letting Maya get exposed to this kind of harmful reading.Â

“Wait, what does my teacher have to do with this?” Maya blinked.Â
“And do you own the school?”Â
How could he even fire a teacher like that?Â
Toby gave her a calm, arrogant smile.Â
He stared at her and asked, “What do you think?”Â
That single, lazy question shut her up instantly.Â
“You are not allowed to buy those kinds of books again,” he said coldly. “Otherwise, I’ll fire your teacher.” Toby threatened her, and the second he remembered what he’d just seen on the screen, his pale face flushed red all over again.Â
Maya did not think that he would react this way.Â
“Why not? That’s tyranny!” Maya protested immediately.Â
She turned around and grabbed Alfred dramatically. “Boohoo! This evil capitalist does nothing but bully us poor commoners!”Â
Alfred was lying on the desk, helping her finish her homework.Â
Then, without warning, she suddenly hugged him. He shifted slightly, turning his body in response.Â
Almost instinctively, he reached up and patted her soft, curly hair.Â
The two children ended up nestled together in an affectionate little pile, quietly clinging to each other like it was the most natural thing in the world.Â
Toby stared at them expressionlessly.Â
He was not jealous.Â
He absolutely was not jealous!Â
Maya, meanwhile, glanced at him and caught that fleeting expression.Â
Her eyes lit up. She slipped out of Alfred’s arms and slowly moved toward Toby instead. Tilting her head up, she said sweetly, “Hey, if you let me buy books again, I can give you a ‘sister-exclusive hug’ too.”Â
