Chapter 522

Chapter 522

Daron racked his brain, trying to remember what Marina was talking about.

He finally recalled the moment when he said those things.

He took a deep breath, his gaze lingering on Marina’s reddened eyes. After a long pause, he asked, “So, you ended our engagement because of what I said?”

Marina pressed her lips together and nodded, struggling to find the words.

“Yeah. I figured you didn’t like me. But since you were the heir, and things with the Zamora family were so complicated, you had to accept the engagement. I…” Marina’s voice trailed off.

As Daron listened to Marina, he felt like he could barely breathe.

He stared at her delicate face. “Why didn’t you ask me directly? You heard those words and just wrote me off?”

Marina pressed her lips tightly together, and seeing the look on Daron’s face now, it hit her that she might have misunderstood him all along.

She just gazed at Daron, lost in thought, and before she even realized it, tears slipped down her cheeks.

“I thought you liked Elnora,” Marina admitted.

Daron fell silent.

“What made you think I had feelings for her?” he asked.

Marina bit her lip. “You were always hanging around her, even giving her rides home after school. I…”

Daron took a deep breath, his eyes locked on Marina’s face as he spoke in a low, serious tone.

“Back then, all I wanted was to see you a little more. Driving your sister home was just my way of finding any excuse to be

near you.”

After all, Marina was only seventeen at the time.

He just wanted a few extra moments with his young fiancée, so he’d drive Elnora home to the Finley mansion.

Elnora understood his feelings, so neither of them ever spoke about it.

No one expected Marina to end up misunderstanding all of this.

As Marina listened to Daron, her heart ached even more.

She bit her lip, unable to stop the tears from falling. Thinking about all the years she and Daron had lost, and remembering how devastated she was when she left Vrufield, Marina felt suffocated by regret.

“But I heard it myself,” Marina said.

Daron pulled Marina into a tight embrace, and seeing her face streaked with tears, all his anger just melted away.

“Those words were for someone else,” he explained. “Back then, the Finley family was a hot commodity. Plenty of people were vying for a chance to marry in.

“You had lots of choices for who to marry. Besides me, guys from the Grant and Clark families were potential candidates.”

Kieran was one of the most popular choices for marrying into the Finley family back then.

Marina listened quietly to Daron.

Kieran was the eldest grandson of the Clark family, and just like Daron, he didn’t get to choose who he’d marry.

The Clark family had been eyeing both Marina and Elnora for a while.

At the time, Kieran’s fiancée was basically going to be either Elnora or Marina.

Daron had already decided on Marina, so the only thing he could do was try to nudge Kieran toward Elnora with his words.

That was why he said those words.

As a match, Elnora really was a top pick.

But Daron never saw Marina as just a marriage match for himself. To him, Marina was the wife he wanted to protect.

Since he’d already chosen Marina, it was only natural for him to nudge the others toward Elnora.

But in the end, Kieran and Elnora never got engaged. Instead, over the years, Kieran became obsessed with Bette.

Daron never imagined that his own selfish words, meant to nudge Kieran toward Elnora, would end up making Marina break off their engagement.

They’d missed out on so many years together. If Lavern hadn’t cheated, and if Marina hadn’t insisted on breaking up and returning to Vrufield, he might have lost her forever.

Daron was shaken, and he pulled Marina into a tight embrace. “You fool, couldn’t you have just asked me directly?”

Marina nestled in Daron’s arms, murmuring, “How was I supposed to? Back then, we hardly ever interacted. You never reached out to me. I honestly thought you didn’t like me.”

As she spoke, Marina tilted her head up to look at Daron, her eyes all misty with tears.

“Do you know how devastated I was when I realized you didn’t like me?” she whispered.

Seeing her cry, Daron felt like his heart was being ripped apart.

He quickly leaned down and kissed the tears from the corners of her eyes.

“It’s all my fault,” he apologized. “I should’ve been more obvious. I kept everything too hidden.”

Marina sniffled, snuggling closer to Daron, and murmured, “It’s all your fault.”

Daron nodded, going along with her words. “You’re right, it’s all my fault,” he said softly. “I made you feel so wronged all these years.

Marina hugged Daron back tightly, sobbing softly.

Listening to Marina’s sobs, Daron felt his heart shatter into pieces.

Only when her crying finally faded did he gently scoop her into his arms and carry her upstairs.

When Daron gently laid Marina down on the bed, she stirred awake. She opened her eyes and looked at him.

Seeing Daron right there, so close, she reached up and gently touched his face.

“Hubby,” she whispered.

Daron nodded and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.

Mm. I’m right here,” he whispered.

Hearing that, Marina felt another wave of tears coming on. Her eyes shimmered with tears, but she forced a smile for Daron hrough them.

How wonderful,” she whispered.

How wonderful that Daron has wanted to marry me all along, Marina thought. ‘How wonderful that even after all those rears apart, we still found our way back to each other. Everything just felt so wonderful.’

Hearing Marina’s words, Daron gave her head a gentle rub, his voice soft and tender.

Yeah, it’s really wonderful,” he replied. “After all the twists and turns, we were destined to end up together.”

Marina let out a soft “mm,” wrapped her arms around Daron’s neck, and lifted her face to kiss him.

Daron leaned in, wrapped his arms around her, and deepened their kiss.

Hayley’s account got banned, so she had no way to appeal or complain.

She started posting a bunch of accusatory updates on her Instagram Story, calling out Daron and Marina.

Daron sent Hayley a legal notice straight away.

Meanwhile, Bette issued a statement demanding Hayley pay back all the money she got from selling Wilhelmina’s things. Otherwise, she’d take Hayley to court for theft.

Bette’s announcement had Hayley by the throat.

But Hayley still wouldn’t admit defeat. She kept trying to defend herself.

She even went off on the Blanchard family, accusing them of being heartless and ungrateful.

She even claimed that if it weren’t for her, Verena would’ve moved right into the family ages ago. And Daron absolutely wouldn’t have been raised as the heir to the Zamora Group.

The Blanchard family didn’t bother wasting time bickering with Hayley. They simply dropped all the payment records

howing what they’d sent her over the years.

They’d always treated Hayley as Daron’s nanny, and even after she became Leo’s wife, they carried on paying her.

More than twenty years ago, when the average daily wage was just a few bucks, the Blanchard family was already paying Hayley thousands of dollars a month.

And as the cost of living went up over the years, her salary kept increasing with inflation.

Seriously, what kind of nanny got paid that much?

When Hayley realized her tricks weren’t working, she had no choice but to reach out to her lawyer and set up a meeting

with Zara.

She was desperate to know where Zara had hidden all that money.
