“Daron, why are you the one out here? Where’s Elnora? I need to go in and talk to her. There’s something really important I have to tell her,” Zack said, already heading inside.
Daron lifted his hand, blocking Zack’s path. His voice was cool and detached, showing no emotion at all.
“It’s getting late, and you’ve had a few drinks. Head home and get some rest. If it’s really important, we can talk tomorrow,” Daron said.
Zack furrowed his brows, not happy with what Daron said. He swatted Daron’s hand away.
“Daron, this is between me and Elnora. You have no say in this. No matter what, I’m seeing her today,” Zack insisted.
‘I know there’s still a place for me in Elnora’s heart,’ Zack thought.
This time, he wasn’t going to let her slip away.
Daron said, “You really don’t get why I’m here, do you? You and Elnora were done the second you betrayed her and started seeing Mila.
“Zack, man up and take responsibility for what you did. You made your choice, so don’t regret it now. Acting out drunk like this will only make you a laughingstock.”
Zack’s face darkened. He suddenly stopped, spun around, and grabbed Daron by the collar, his grip tight and full of anger.
Zack shouted, “You seriously think I’m just drunk and losing it? I love her, more than anyone else ever could. And you really think Albert’s some perfect guy?
“Albert
goes through girlfriends way more often than I do. Why does he get a free pass, but I don’t?”
Albert had been dominating the entertainment headlines in Port City lately.
He had way more women around him than Zack ever did. Zack was only ever involved with Mila.
He’d only made one mistake, and he believed that, given their history, Elnora would forgive him.
If she could accept Albert, then she’d surely forgive him too.

Daron said, “Albert is nothing like you. The Campbell family helped the Finleys through their toughest times. You pursued Elnora for years, dated her for years. What did you actually do for her?
“Zack, you never had what it takes to lead the Finley family out of trouble. Wasn’t marrying Mila just a calculated decision? And now you want to talk about love?”
Daron’s words hit Zack so hard that his face burned with both shame and fury. He gritted his teeth, completely losing control as Daron’s remarks pushed him over the edge.
Without thinking, Zack lashed out and threw a punch at Daron.
Daron moved fast, grabbing Zack’s hand before he could throw a punch. His gaze was icy, but he kept his cool and didn’t hit Zack back.
Instead, he gave Zack a hard shove. Zack, tipsy from the booze, stumbled a few steps and fell to the floor.
Seeing this, Zack’s buddy rushed over to help him up. He glanced at Daron, his words carrying a hint of reproach but careful not to offend him.
“Daron, seriously, we’ve all been tight since we were kids. Zack really cares about Ms. Finley. Just let him go in and say a couple words to her, alright?” his buddy pleaded.
Daron stood at the entrance of the Finley residence, shooting Zack a cold look.
“I already told you. She doesn’t want to see him,” Daron replied coolly.
Zack’s expression hardened. “I don’t buy it!”
“Daron, come on, I’m begging you here. Just let me see Elnora. If I can talk to her, she’ll definitely reconsider. She won’t go through with marrying Albert, I know it. You…” Zack pleaded.
Before Zack could finish, a man’s voice cut him off.
“Well, well, what’s going on here? Trying to poach my woman right at my doorstep?” Albert said.
Zack’s face went pale the moment he heard that voice.
Albert strolled over, his gaze landing on Zack with a casual, nonchalant air. He looked totally unbothered,
It was clear he didn’t take Zack seriously, didn’t even see him as competition.
On the other hand, a flash of insecurity crossed Zack’s eyes, and for a moment, he couldn’t bring himself to look Albert in the eye.
“Zack, acting like this is a bit much, don’t you think?” Albert said.
Albert came right up to Zack and stopped, a mocking look in his eyes.
Zack took a deep breath, bracing himself before he finally looked Albert in the eye.

“Mr. Campbell, Elnora and I really love each other. She doesn’t care about you at all. Even if you marry her, it won’t make either of you happy. Do her a favor and let her go,” Zack pleaded.
Albert arched his eyebrow, a lazy grin spreading across his face, like Zack had just cracked a joke.
“How do you know she won’t be happy with me? Zack, you’re in no position to tell me any of this,” Albert said, his voice full of mockery.
“Truth is, you’re the one making things hard for her,” Albert added.
Albert’s words made Zack’s face burn with shame. He knew deep down he had no leg to stand on. Right now, he really had no place to say any of this to Albert.
But still, he and Elnora had years of history together.
“Because I know Elnora. She’s never been the type to let someone in easily. She wouldn’t just open her heart to anyone…” Zack said.
Albert cut him off, his voice calm, almost bored.
“No, you don’t really know her,” Albert shot back.
Zack’s eyes widened in shock, but he quickly snapped back, his face flushed with anger as he argued with Albert.
Zack shot back, “I know her. How could I not?
“We’ve been together for so many years. No one, absolutely no one, knows her like I do.”
Daron’s brows furrowed. Zack was making things difficult for Elnora, especially with Albert watching.
This whole conversation could easily stir up trouble between Albert and Elnora once they’re married.
“Zack!” Daron snapped.
He shot a frosty glare at Zack’s friend. “Take him away already!”
When Zack’s buddy saw the anger starting to show in Daron’s eyes, he got worried things were about to blow up. Not wanting Zack to stir up more drama, he hurried over and grabbed Zack’s hand, dragging him away before things got out of hand.
Zack was riding a drunken high, and when Albert showed up, his urge to win kicked into overdrive,
No matter what, he couldn’t let himself look bad in front of Albert today.
He didn’t even care how much trouble he might cause for Elnora. He just wanted to one-up Albert.
Zack believed that if he could beat Albert tonight, he’d get Elnora back, no doubt about it.
“I’m not going anywhere! If someone’s leaving, it’s you! No matter what, I’m seeing Elnora tonight!” Zack yelled.
