After listening to the two recordings, Elara suddenly understood why Albert had dated Arnetta for three years but never married her.

Arnetta was just too fragile. If she married into the Campbell family, and even if Reese was warm and friendly, the people in their social circle would still drive her insane.

In this cutthroat world, Elara couldn’t even imagine how much Arnetta would end up tearing herself apart.

But Elara was still pissed.

That entertainment reporter was way out of line.

They’d already run stories about Elnora’s health problems before.

Even knowing Elnora wasn’t in good shape, they still had the nerve to call and interrogate her like that.

If Elnora had been even a little bit weaker, she would’ve been led around by the nose.

“Ms. Finley, I’ll get someone to handle the outlet that interviewed you right now,” Elara said.

Elnora replied quietly, her voice calm and steady. “No need.

“To be able to spread rumors like this in Port City, offending both the Campbell and the Taylor families at the same time, doesn’t mean they’re bold.

“It means they’ve got someone powerful backing them.

“I just married into the Campbell family. I’m not in a position to start making enemies yet.”

Elara gritted her teeth. “So we’re just supposed to swallow this insult and let them keep making your life miserable?”

Elnora remembered Arnetta’s sob right before she hung up. She spoke in a flat tone, “We don’t need to do anything. Someone else will step in.”

Surprise flashed in Elara’s eyes as she lowered her voice, “Who are you talking about?”

If they’d got someone powerful backing them, most people would be too scared to go after them.

Elnora just stayed quiet, not answering Elara’s question.

Elara started to suspect something. “Could it be Mr. Campbell?”

Elnora let out a quiet “mm,” massaging her brow.

Then, she spoke in a calm voice. “I’m tired, so I’m going to sleep. Unless it’s the end of the world, don’t bother calling me.”

Elara felt uneasy, but she didn’t dare say much more in front of Elnora, afraid her mood would rub off on her.

So she just agreed quietly. “Even if the world comes crashing down, I won’t call you. Isn’t Mr. Campbell there to handle it?”

Elara thought, ‘Doesn’t he love being the knight in shining armor?

‘Let him keep swooping in to save the day.

‘It’s not like it’ll wear him out.’

Elnora just replied with a calm “mm” and ended the call abruptly.

She was feeling a little lightheaded.

It was probably because those entertainment reporters kept blowing up her phone earlier.

Elnora walked upstairs, slipped into her room, freshened up, and collapsed onto the bed. Her head was throbbing, and she could feel her thoughts buzzing nonstop.

After Albert, Kaelin, and the crew rolled into the bar, they got the scoop on the latest entertainment headlines.

Kaelin played Elnora’s interview recording for Albert.

Albert frowned as he listened.

Right after, Kaelin pulled up Arnetta’s recording and played it for Albert.

Albert’s face grew noticeably colder.

Kaelin didn’t notice a thing and said in a flat tone, “Compared to Ms. Finley’s interview, Arnetta is way more

vulnerable.

“Those entertainment reporters really know who to mess with. They wouldn’t dare hassle Ms. Finley, so they just zero in on Arnetta.”

Eamon sat off to the side, glanced at Albert, and spoke quietly, “Hey, maybe you should go home tonight.

“Ms. Finley’s probably not feeling great right now.”

Albert gave Eamon a frosty stare, his tone icy. “Since when are you so tight with Ms. Finley? You can just tell when she’s in a bad mood?

“I listened to the interview and didn’t catch anything that sounded like she was upset.”

After hearing that, Eamon glanced up at Albert.

Noticing a hint of anger in Albert’s eyes, Eamon let out a resigned sigh.

Benedict quickly jumped in to smooth things over. “Eamon and Ms. Finley have teamed up a few times before.

“Eamon’s got a sharp eye, so he picks up on stuff like that…”

Albert didn’t say a word. He got up from the couch, his face dark, kicked the table in front of him hard, and walked out.

Benedict frowned and let out a heavy sigh. “Albert’s been really on edge these days.”

Kaelin looked like he saw right through it all. “He’s got someone at home whose temper is nastier than his, and he can’t handle her. So he hangs out with us and vents.

“Eamon, maybe you should just lay low somewhere else for a while. Albert hasn’t been able to stand you for ages.”

Eamon rubbed his brow, frustration flickering in his eyes. “I was just trying to help.”

Kaelin walked over, threw an arm around Eamon’s shoulders, and laughed.

He said, “Of course, we know you were just trying to help, but Albert might start seeing you as his competition.

“Looks like Albert’s got the jealousy bug, totally understandable.”

Eamon looked resigned, frustration flickering in his eyes, and said quietly, “Well, I’ve got a project coming up that requires me to head out of town for a bit.”

Benedict nodded. “It’s probably wise to steer clear of him for now. There’s no point getting caught up as collateral damage.”

When Albert got back to Southview Residence, the place was eerily quiet.

Then he remembered that Elnora had already fired Heather.

Other than the security guards at the gate, Heather was the only servant living in the main house.

Now that Heather was gone, the already quiet house felt even more deserted.

Albert frowned as he headed upstairs, making sure his footsteps echoed through the hall.

When he passed by Elnora’s room, he stopped for a bit.

The door was left slightly ajar.

Albert cleared his throat on purpose, but there was no response from inside,

He glanced through the crack and found the room was dimly lit.

‘Guess she’s asleep, Albert thought.

Albert looked a bit puzzled and then headed back to his own room.

While he was washing up, Albert couldn’t stop thinking about the latest celebrity gossip.

He’d ended up in the entertainment headlines more times than he could remember.

People had asked him about Arnetta plenty of times before, but he’d always just brushed it off with a smile and never given anyone a real answer.

But this time, even though Elnora hadn’t asked, he actually wanted to give her an explanation.

He walked up to Elnora’s door, paused at the slightly open doorway, stood there for a moment, took a deep breath, and was about to knock.

But right before his hand touched the door, he stopped himself, turned around, and headed back to his own

room.

Back in his room, Albert scratched his head, annoyed at himself.

He’d had a smooth ride for years, never thinking he’d end up afraid to see how his own wife would react.

He was so frustrated that he actually laughed at himself and muttered a swear word under his breath.

All he could do was pull out his phone and call Elnora.

The ringtone echoed through the house.

Albert tightened his grip on his phone, suddenly feeling nervous for reasons he couldn’t quite name.

He stood just outside his own room and could hear Elnora’s phone ringing from her room.

He waited until the call finally went to voicemail, but Elnora didn’t answer.

An automated female voice came on. “Sorry, the person you’re trying to reach is not available right now.”

Albert furrowed his brow, irritation flashing in his eyes.

He thought in anger, ‘She’s ignoring my call.

‘She’s doing this on purpose.

‘Does she think I’m still not home yet?’

With a grim look on his face, Albert strode up to Elnora’s door, raised his hand, and knocked.

“Ms. Finley, I need to talk to you,” he called out, his voice tight.

She didn’t answer. It was total silence from inside.

Albert frowned, hesitated for a second, and gently pushed the door open a bit more,

The room was dim, and the quiet was so heavy that it felt almost unnatural.

He felt a sudden uneasiness, but still walked into the room.

Worried Elnora might think he was just barging in, he said as he stepped inside, “Ms. Finley, I’m coming in.”

Albert felt totally stifled. ‘Man, can you believe a husband has to worry about his own wife getting pissed just for stepping into her room?’
