Chapter 91 A Question of ExchangeÂ
There didn’t seem to be many children in the house-just Maya and Alfred.Â
Toby was silent for a couple of seconds, dragging out his words. “I’m busy.Â
“I’m learning how to take over parts of the family business. Meetings, people to see… I barely have time to come home.Â
“And it’s only going to get busier.”Â
When he wasn’t spiraling, Toby’s expression was cool and restrained. The sharp, unstable energy he usually carried faded, leaving behind an almost adult composure.Â
Maya muttered without thinking, “Why are you so mature at 14?Â
“And if we have an older brother, why isn’t he the one doing all this?”Â
“He’s not interested,” Toby replied flatly. “And I’m the most suitable one right now.”Â
In their family, children were trained from a very young age.Â
Winner takes all. Loser gets nothing.Â
“I barely saw Mom and Dad growing up. There were always strangers coming in to teach me things.”Â
He had long stopped remembering how many instructors had been replaced around him. Only the most capable people were allowed near him.Â
“Occasionally…” Toby’s lips curled slightly, but there was no warmth in his smile. “George, that psycho, would sneak in to check on me. I usually used him as a moving target for shooting practice.”Â
Maya gasped.Â
“Are you okay?” she asked, imagining his upbringing, genuinely thinking he might be a little unhinged, but at least mentally strong.Â
Toby nodded. “Okay. Just bored.”Â
Having received too little emotional feedback his entire life, he eventually developed a pathological curiosity about “feelings.”Â
And in the end, he still found it boring.Â
It was not nearly as fulfilling as he had once imagined.Â
“Since you’re so bored, let’s spend your money together, then, bro.” Maya suddenly perked up, switching gears instantly. “I saw a limited-edition doll I want!”Â
She eagerly pulled out the tablet and opened a page showing an SD-style collectible figure, holding it up toÂ
him.Â
“Can you buy this for me?”Â

Chapter 91 A Question of ExchangeÂ
Toby didn’t understand her hobbies at all, but she looked genuinely excited.Â
Her amber eyes were round and focused, like a small animal waiting for approval.Â
He stared at her for a moment, unusually quiet. Then, he gave a soft “oh.”Â
After a pause, he actually pulled out a card from his pocket and placed it in front of her. It was a card with no spending limit.Â
“Family rules say I can’t transfer money to Dad and the others.”Â
Raymond was considered someone effectively “exiled” in the family hierarchy.Â
“So my cards are only for you.”Â
Maya stared at the card for a full two seconds, completely stunned. “I was just joking.”Â
“I’m not joking, Maya.” Toby looked at her directly, expression cooling slightly. “Why do you keep rejecting me?”Â
Why did he crack again?Â
Maya scratched her head, and she wanted desperately to ask what she did to him.Â
Toby tilted his head. “Do you think I treated you badly before, so you’re keeping your distance?” He continued expressionlessly, “I’m sorry. I really did hate you at the time.Â
“I didn’t like someone suddenly appearing in a family I’d waited so long for.”Â
“You were indeed very mean,” Maya admitted honestly, still holding the card.Â
“I know,” Toby replied. “I still won’t change that part.Â
“Because I spoke badly to you, you kept hitting me.Â
“Honestly, it hurt.”Â
After being abandoned on an isolated island at eight, he hadn’t experienced being attacked like that again.Â
His first reaction was anger, and then retaliation with sharper words.Â
But now, he actually missed those moments when she would jump at him and start fighting.Â
It was hard to admit, but Toby genuinely liked how alive she was.Â
She was like weeds, able to thrive anywhere.Â
The boy blinked once, then lowered his voice for the first time into something almost pleading.Â
“Don’t reject me anymore. Please.”Â
His lips pressed tightly together. Something-nervousness, or something else-colored his pale face faintly.Â

“I understand,” Maya said seriously. “Thank you.”Â
When Toby saw her finally take the card, his tense expression cased slightly.Â
FissbruÂ
He was awkward, so whenever it came to things he truly cared about, he became overly sensitive instead.Â
If Maya rejected him again, he really would break down.Â
“Um… I want to ask something.” Maya looked at the black card in her hand. “Is this part of a transaction?”Â
Toby froze for a moment. “What?”Â
“A transaction,” she said. “Don’t you like exchanging things with people?”Â
