Chapter 109 A Dangerous Favor

It sounded like a vicious cycle.

That was what Maya thought after hearing it.

Whoever ended up with this money-burning disaster would be blessing their whole family.

“As far as I know…” Maya said, resting her chin on her hand. She yawned, sounding sleepy, her words a little slurred. “Planning crimes takes a lot of money too. Since you’re the boss, you should really think through the financial side of things. What if something expensive comes up later? You’d need to figure out how to make money.”

Just look at her dad.

Raymond never mentioned his past in front of her.

But Maya guessed that he had definitely been the kind of person who treated life carelessly, never took anything seriously, and loved causing trouble.

Now he had obviously changed.

He no longer had the energy to stir things up. After raising a kid, he was exhausted all the time. “Don’t worry. If I run out of money, I’ll just go to the police station and turn in one of my subordinates.” His voice was cheerful, and his amber eyes curved with amusement like a smug cat’s. “I’ll trade them in for some reward money. Then I’ll have them figure out a way to break out of jail, and I can keep repeating the process.”

Unlike her father, who never treated his subordinates like people, George saw them as a bunch of very useful tools-ones that could be exchanged for cash.

Maya fell silent.

Her expression went blank. It was the first time she had learned that there was such a sustainable way to drain resources dry.

She opened her mouth, then after a long pause finally forced out, “Anyone stuck with a boss like you must have had the worst luck for eight lifetimes.”

Maya had always kept a certain level of caution around him.

He looked cheerful and outgoing, like he had something seriously wrong with him, but underneath it all, he was still a cold and dangerous person.

He basically treated her like an amusing toy that fought back, like a cat poking at a rolling ball of yarn, coming over to tease it whenever he got bored.

Maya found him deeply annoying.

Toby had said it before, useless people were the same as enemies.

This guy was more than useless. He wasted her time too.

“I’ll bring you a gift next time.” George acted as if he hadn’t seen the disgust in her eyes. Instead, he sounded excited as he promised her. He even reached out a finger and lightly poked her forehead. His expression was calm, but his tone was serious.

“Really?” Maya asked skeptically.

“Really.”

That was the full record of Maya’s conversation with the drifter guy this week.

Even now, she still had no idea what his name was.

So Maya simply called him Drifter Guy.

If she hadn’t been trying to stay polite, she would have rather called him Hobo.

Maya still spent most of her lunch breaks near the pavilion. She had been incredibly free lately. Kaia hadn’t come to class in a long time, and the school had been peaceful.

However, peace only existed to be broken.

One noon, Maya suddenly felt a light tap on her shoulder.

She turned around on instinct.

What came into view wasn’t George’s grinning face, but something dangling down from above her head.

Maya blinked instinctively.

It was a pendant of excellent quality emerald, rich green and so vivid it looked like it could drip with color.

It was wrapped in delicate gold filigree, shaped into intricate patterns, swaying lightly in front of her eyes.

So pretty.

No girl disliked beautiful things.

Maya stared at it in a daze for two seconds, then followed the hand holding the pendant upward and met George’s gaze.

“It’s for you.”

He smiled generously.

Maya’s first reaction wasn’t surprise, but suspicion. “Where did you steal this from?”

“I didn’t steal it.”

Well, he actually did-from his younger brother.

“Then I still don’t want it.”

Her attitude was firm.

“Why not? Being overly cautious isn’t a very good trait,” George said, confused by her resistance.

Without giving her a choice, he shoved it into her palm. “If you like it, keep it. If you don’t, throw it away. Simple.”

It wasn’t his anyway.

Maya held the icy-cold pendant and felt like she was holding a hot potato.

“I still don’t get you.” She lifted her head and looked George straight in the eye, finally asking the question that had bothered her all along. “Why do you give me things? Why do you keep bothering me? What exactly do you want?”

George looked at her confused little face, still full of caution, and suddenly laughed. There was curiosity and amusement in it.

“I just suddenly remembered something very interesting.”

He sounded like someone speaking in riddles, saying things that meant something and nothing at the same time.

Maya naturally asked, “About what?”

“About…” He paused, then suddenly cut himself off and grinned. “I’m not telling you yet.”

What Maya didn’t know was that the entire scene of her talking with George had been completely witnessed by a figure hiding behind a nearby rock formation.

It was the male classmate Toby had ordered to “keep an eye on Maya.”

At that moment, he held his breath, his heart pounding wildly, and hurried off to report what he had seen. He only hoped Toby would stop haunting him like a ghost.

Please.

Let the troublesome maniac catch that blond guy already and leave me alone.

“I saw Maya with a teenage boy.”
