Chapter 5
At the Clearwater Estate villa. Chad’s expression darkened. “The divorce petition came to my office today. You’ve been
planning this behind my back? Using this morning’s tabloid as your excuse?”
I gave a humorless smile. “You’re the one cheating. Chad. How is that an excuse?”.
“I’ve never treated you badly, Olivia.”
The Clearwater Estate villa sat on a hillside overlooking the bay, one of the most sought-after properties in the city.
It had originally belonged to Chad. Not long after we married, he transferred it into my name behind his mother’s back.
He had gone against her wishes by marrying me in the first place, and she couldn’t talk him out of it. Her one condition
was that brutal prenup.
If we split, I wouldn’t take a single dollar of the Wellington fortune.
I didn’t want to accept the house. I was afraid of stirring up more trouble, and even more afraid of angering his mother.
But Chad had smiled and pulled me close. “Take it. Call it my apology in advance. Someday, when I make you mad, you’ll
have somewhere to hide from me.”
The villa was worth eight million dollars. If you added in all the money he had poured into my family’s debts over the
years, and honestly, I hadn’t come out at a loss in those five years.
“You’re right.” I said. “So let’s end this cleanly. Just sign the papers, and I’ll walk away with nothing, exactly like the
prenup says.”
He raised an eyebrow and gave a cold laugh. “In such a hurry? Found someone else?”
Before I could answer, my phone rang. It was my mother. She didn’t even say hello before launching into a tirade.
‘Chad says you’re divorcing him over that tabloid trash?”
“You’ve put up with this for years. What good does a divorce do you now?”
“Your father had just as many women on the side, and I lived through it. And don’t forget our situation.”
“Our whole family depends on him. If you leave him, who’s going to take care of us? That woman out there hasn’t even
made her move yet, and you’re already handing him over.”
I listened to her words without feeling a thing. I had heard them so many times over the years.
There was flattery for the Wellingtons, worry about the Hayes family, greed for money and status. But there was never
any concern for me, her daughter.

In the past. I would have let it go in one ear and out the other. I couldn’t be bothered to argue with her But this time. I
looked up and met Chad’s eyes.
I held the phone to my ear and smiled as I asked my mother, “So what if he stops helping us after the divorce? That old
family friend is only sixty-five. After I’m single again, you can just take me back to meet him.”
Chad’s face went cold. His gaze turned razor-sharp.
I listened to my mother sputtering in outrage and hung up.
Chad’s voice was icy when he spoke. “You think you had it easy for no reason? Why do you think no one in your circle
ever dares to mention how close you came to selling yourself to cover your father’s debts?”
“Fine. You want a divorce. I’ll give it to you. Let’s see how well you do without the Wellington name backing you up.
Olivia.”
He stood up from the couch, hands in his pockets, looking down at me.
“Maybe once you get out there and see how people treat you, you’ll start missing the days when you were still Mrs.
Wellington.”
