Chapter 153 Running Wasn’t an OptionÂ

George was tall and lean, he looked strong, and there was a quiet danger in the way he carried himself.Â
Maya covered her eyes on instinct, her hands trembling. The whole thing-from the moment George moved to the moment the man went down-couldn’t have taken more than a few minutes.Â
He slammed the man to the ground and pinned him there. His grip was steady as he pressed the cold edge of the shears against that criminal’s neck.Â
He didn’t say a single word.Â
A short scream cut through the air.Â
That criminal twitched a few times, then went still. George casually dragged him over and tossed him into the flower bushes.Â
Then he slowly turned around and looked at the girl behind him. “You’re still here, Maya?” he said, dragging out her name.Â
Maya’s heart pounded so hard it hurt.Â
She slowly lowered her hands and met his eyes.Â
There were small drops of blood on his white shirt. He was smiling, but in this moment, that smile looked strange on his soft, boyish face.Â
Like he might turn that shear toward her next.Â
“It’s not too late for you to run now, Maya Clark,” George said lightly.Â
Maya didn’t move. She just stared at him blankly.Â
Even though Maya had suspected something about his identity, seeing it happen right in front of her still hit hard.Â
There were faint specks of blood on George’s shirt as he stood there, he was asking calmly why she wasn’t running. A cold shiver crawled up her spine and shot straight to her head.Â
“You…” Her voice trembled.Â
She swallowed and forced herself to steady her breath.Â
“You’re letting me go?”Â

George tilted his head, his tone lazy and almost bored. “What else would I do?”Â
He paused for a beat and lifted his mouth slightly.Â
Not a real smile, just a faint curve. His voice was light, like this was nothing serious. “I’m not going to chase you.”Â
Maya felt numb all over.Â
Really?Â
But he just called her by her name. Before this, he just called her Maya.Â
That tiny change said everything. If she ran now, she would end up like the man in the bushes.Â
So running was out of the question.Â
When it came down to life and death, people could adjust faster than they thought. Maya steadied herself quickly. She stayed where she was and managed to speak as if nothing had happened. “You killed someone, teacher.”Â
They had known each other for about a month, but she had never really understood him.Â
She was probably a stray animal for George. She was likely just something to amuse him when he was bored, and he could easily get rid of her.Â
“Mm-hmm.” He nodded, smiling at her.Â
His expression was perfectly normal, as if nothing had happened at all.Â
Maya swallowed again, her thoughts racing.Â
“Then you…” she started.Â
George grew curious and didn’t move. He wanted to hear what she would say. For now, he had no intention of doing anything, at least not until she finished.Â
“Do you need help?” she blurted out at once. “If you don’t deal with the body, someone’s going to find it.”Â
Help?Â
George actually froze.Â
“If you don’t handle it, someone will find it!” Maya repeated quickly, her voice low and rushed, as if she were afraid he might cut her off. “I can keep watch, I can help you find a place, I can—”Â

“You want to help me?” George tilted his head, looking at her with a strange expression.Â
Maya nodded, doing her best not to look at the man lying in the bushes. “Do you need it?”Â
“No.” His expression turned a little odd. “There’s no need to deal with it.”Â
At least, not here.Â
Maya blinked in surprise. “Won’t someone find it?”Â
George shook his head. For a moment, he even looked oddly gentle.Â
“It doesn’t matter if they do.”Â
Maya stared at him.Â
George stared back. For once, he was genuinely confused.Â
This is strange. Really strange.Â
George liked making friends. He was easygoing by nature, but none of his friendships ever lasted long.Â
His friends were the oddballs.Â
They complained all the time-about coworkers, about their bosses. Some even said they wished those people were gone for good.Â
So George helped them. He solved their problems.Â
In the end, they all turned on him. Some even said they wanted to kill him.Â
He had finally made a group of friends. By now, he had killed almost all of them.Â
At first, George had thought that if Maya tried to run, he would kill her too.Â
One more person wouldn’t make a difference.Â
He didn’t believe in guilt. To him, everything in the world was just passing scenery. If one disappeared, there would always be another.Â
This girl was interesting, sure. But the world was big.Â
There would always be someone else like her.Â
George never cared about consequences.Â

But she was asking if he needed help to deal with the body?Â
In all his years, this was the first time.Â
“But if the police come, you’ll go to prison. They might even execute you,” Maya said again, making sure. “I heard you have to wake up early and work all day in prison. Are you really sure you don’t want help?”Â
