Chapter 159 Hiding in Plain SightÂ
Take Toby, for example. For no reason at all, he liked bringing a gun to school like it was a toy.Â
When things went wrong, he reacted faster than anyone. He was the first to leave the classroom. Then he turned back and gave them a cold warning. “Anyone who tries to follow me will end up with a bullet in their head.”Â
In an instant, everyone kept their distance.Â
Forget asking him for help. They were too busy staying out of hisÂ
way.Â
No one expected the only thing that would make them feel safe would be a kid.Â
Maya held a hammer in one hand and let out a soft, “Huh.”Â
A sledgehammer?Â
The name sounded strong.Â
She liked it.Â
She smiled and said, “Let’s hide in the garden for now.”Â
No matter what, the garden had thick bushes and trees. There were no cameras around either. It was the perfect place to hide.Â
At the same time, Alfred followed behind his brother, talking nonstop.Â
“Students disappearing all at once and signals cut off-this looks like a professional job.”Â
“Shut up,” Toby snapped, pacing back and forth. “I don’t want to hear your useless analysis rightÂ
now.”Â
He muttered to himself, frowning. “Who are these people? Taking control of the whole school this fast, they must’ve planned this for a long time.”Â
Something felt off; the kidnappers had been grabbing students without picking targets.Â
When they ran into the two of them, they acted like they didn’t exist. They just walked past.Â
That made Toby suspicious. It felt like an inside job.Â
And if it was someone they knew, one person came to mind.Â

Toby suddenly stopped walking.Â
“Did you know George shows up a lot around here?”Â
Alfred paused and said, “Not really. I haven’t seen him in a long time. He hasn’t come to see me either.”Â
“That’s not possible.” Toby frowned. “He comes to see me all the time.”Â
Then he remembered something.Â
“He even gave me a wilted flower today,” Toby said, sounding annoyed. “Same as always. Cheap and weird. What, is he broke now? Trying to make money by joining a school kidnapping?”Â
Alfred didn’t reply.Â
He was thinking.Â
“When did you see George?” he asked.Â
Toby had a good memory. He listed every time they had met.Â
“The first time I really saw him,” Toby said slowly, thinking back, “was May 25th.”Â
Alfred fell silent.Â
Two seconds later, he spoke.Â
“On May 24th, a teacher made me stay behind to clean up the equipment, and a homeless man planted a tracker on Maya?”Â
“What?” Toby froze.Â
A homeless man?Â
They looked at each other. Both felt it at once; this situation was getting darker by the second.Â
Toby spoke right away, “The necklace Maya used to wear? A blond kid she met at school stole it from my collection room.”Â
That had bothered him back then.Â
It wasn’t easy to steal from him. Not at all.Â
But that guy had come and gone without leaving a single trace.Â

Whoever he was, he knew exactly what he was doing.Â

Alfred spoke in a low, flat voice. “George had a thing for committing petty theft. Edric almost broke his leg over it once.”Â
The two brothers went over it again, piece by piece.Â
The air turned quiet. Too quiet.Â
“And that blond guy…” Toby frowned, remembering something else. “He used to eat the lunch Maya brought to school.”Â
That part bothered him the most.Â
How broke did that guy have to be to live off his little sister’s food?Â
Alfred’s voice grew even more dull, ‘like he had fully accepted the truth.Â
“George’s been mooching off people since he was a kid. That’s a petty theft, too.”Â
Damn it!Â
The more they went over it, the more familiar the whole situation became to them.Â
Right? George.Â
Both brothers ground the name through their teeth in silence.Â
Toby wanted to kill him.Â
“I’m going to find Maya. Can you find George?” Alfred looked at him. “He’s probably looking for you too. Can you talk to him? Don’t let him do anything crazy. And don’t let his friends grab Maya.”Â
Toby nodded. “I know.”Â
Of course he knew.Â
He tightened his grip on the gun, his face cold. In his head, he had already decided how he would “greet” George when they met.Â
The brothers split up.Â
No one paid Alfred any attention, so he searched everywhere. After a moment of thought, he turned and ran toward the garden.Â
There was nowhere better to hide than the garden.Â

Twisting paths, thick bushes-perfect for hiding. Perfect for ambush.Â
If he were Maya, he would choose this spot too.Â
The boy called out.Â
“Maya.”Â
No answer.Â
He called again.Â
“Maya.”Â
A rustling sound came from behind the bushes.Â
A small head peeked out.Â
When Maya saw him, her eyes lit up.Â
She rushed out at once, grabbed him, and pulled him into a tight hug.Â
“Where did you go?!” she said, holding on hard. “I couldn’t find you anywhere!”Â
She even started to wonder if he’d done something dumb, like going up to the rooftop and getting himself kidnapped.Â
