Chapter 160 The Hunter in the Shadows

Maya hugged Alfred so tightly that she almost knocked the breath out of him.

Alfred didn’t complain; he said calmly, “I’ve been looking for you too.”

They had finally found each other after all this time, but this wasn’t the moment to talk or catch

Alfred had something important to tell her.

“Did you know we have another brother? His name is George.”

Maya froze for a beat before answering, a little unsure.

“I know… our second brother, right? Mom used to mention him. She said he never keeps in touch with the family.”

She had been curious in the beginning, but she had never seen a photo or heard anything about him. After a while, she stopped thinking about it altogether.

“Toby and I think the person who planted a bug on you was George,” Alfred said, watching her closely. “Have you ever met him?”

Maya’s hand moved on its own, gripping the necklace at her throat.

It was the pendant the drifter had given her. Maya had worn it this whole time without taking it off.

“That shady drifter?” Maya said, her voice unsteady, clearly not buying it. “He went too far, pretending to be our brother just to trick us.”

Alfred fell quiet for a second, then answered in a firm, steady tone.

“It’s true. He is our brother.”

He tapped on his watch and pulled up a photo. There was no signal, but the pictures were still there.

“This is from when we were kids,” he said, holding the screen close so she could see. “He’s the one holding me.”

Maya glanced at it once and didn’t dare to take another look.

In the photo, a teenage boy held a much younger Alfred in his arms, smiling brightly.

She had seen that face before.

Maya went completely silent.

“Second brother?” Annie’s voice came from the side, full of surprise. “You guys have another brother?”

She had always thought Toby was their only older brother.

Alfred turned his head slightly, still not bothering to respond.

Annie ignored him and looked at Maya instead, curiosity written all over her face.

Maya still looked dazed as she spoke.

“Yeah, I guess I’m supposed to have four brothers. But I’ve never met the other two.”

This meant that she had no idea how that drifter had suddenly become her brother.

Did that even make sense?

Vincent didn’t care about family drama. Right now, all he could feel was danger creeping closer.

“So where is your brother?” he asked quickly. “Isn’t he coming with us? It’s not safe for him to be out there alone.”

“He’s not the one in danger,” Alfred said quietly. “We are.”

Vincent froze.

Alfred turned and looked toward a certain direction, his expression turning cold.

“And if nothing goes wrong, you’ll be seeing him very soon.”

The moment he finished speaking, footsteps rose from deep in the garden, uneven and fast, like a group moving together. From the sound of it, there were at least seven or eight people.

And they were getting closer.

In an instant, the kids scattered. They rushed into the bushes and flower beds, hiding wherever they could.

Maya quickly shoved the hammer into Alfred’s hands. “Take this,” she said. “If anyone hits you, hit back.”

Alfred stared at the heavy hammer in silence.

He couldn’t figure it out. What had Maya been through?

In his memory, she had always been the younger sister who needed protection. A little fragile. Easy to worry about.

“Got it,” Alfred said at last. He hadn’t planned to fight. From what he’d seen, those kidnappers didn’t care about him. They had walked right past him earlier, like he wasn’t even there.

They were ignoring him, but they might not have ignored Maya.

He wasn’t going to cause trouble for her now.

The two split up and hid. Their only advantage was this-hide-and-seek. If they stayed hidden, they could buy a little time.

As long as they didn’t get exposed, they would avoid fighting.

Ten minutes passed. More kidnappers arrived and began searching the large, tangled garden. Annie was the first to be found.

She gave up right away. To avoid getting hurt, she stayed quiet the whole time.

That made the kidnappers very pleased.

Finally, someone who understood the situation.

She was nothing like that wild kid from earlier, the one who had swung a hammer at people.

Vincent and Sophia were dragged out from their hiding spots one after another.

Only Maya and Alfred were still hidden. They were the most agile.

“The boss asked us to grab the girl named Maya,” one kidnapper said as he pushed aside a bush and looked around. “Where is she?”
