Chapter 161 Caught in the Crosshairs.

The branches rustled. A face slowly came into view through the leaves.

Amber eyes locked onto him without blinking; their gazes met briefly.

Maya froze.

They found her.

The man didn’t waste time fighting her.

He lifted his leg and kicked out hard, aiming for her waist.

The move was quick and powerful. He believed that kick could send the small girl flying ten feet.

The moment Maya saw it coming, she stopped running.

Instead, she turned sharply to face him, her movement clean and controlled. Her leg snapped upward in one swift motion, landing a precise hit at his crotch.

For a full second, the world seemed to pause.

The man’s eyes widened, his mouth opening as if to scream, but no sound came out.

His body folded in on itself as he bent over, hands clutching his crotch, and slowly sank to the ground.

He was in pain. The pain was overwhelming.

Around them, every man instinctively tensed.

Maya pulled her leg back and didn’t linger. She grabbed her stun baton and ran.

This isn’t about playing dirty.

He was the one who made the first move.

Who throws a kick like that out of nowhere?

If anything, he brought it on himself.

As soon as his sister was exposed, Alfred stepped out on his own.

Fine hed

He didn’t see the point in resisting. If fighting wouldn’t change anything, then facing it head-on made more sense.

He walked straight toward the kidnappers and stopped in front of them.

Horus glanced at him, like Alfred was not important.

“Leave the boy,” he said flatly. “Bring me the girl.”

Alfred watched him closely.

The man looked gentle and well put together, dressed neatly, more like a businessman than someone leading a kidnapping operation.

“Maya is my sister,” Alfred said.

Horus lifted an eyebrow. “Your real sister?”

Alfred lies through his teeth. “Yes.”

Horus studied him for a couple of seconds, then let out a small laugh.

“I don’t buy it,” he said. “Shut your mouth, kid. I’m letting you live because of your father.”

His expression hardened.

“Whether she’s your sister or not, she’s coming with me today.”

Alfred said nothing.

He already understood.

These people wouldn’t change their minds because of a few words he said.

On the other side, Maya kept running, her steps quick and steady. No matter how fast she moved, she couldn’t outrun a bullet.

Horus lifted his hand, his face blank and unreadable. He had run out of patience. This girl had wasted far too much of his time.

He took aim at her back and pulled the trigger.

The first shot rang out.

The bullet struck the ground right in front of her feet, dirt spraying into the air.

Maya stopped cold.

Her eyes dropped to the smoking hole by her shoes. She didn’t dare to take another step.

A cold laugh slipped from Horus, then he fired again.

The bullet sliced past Maya’s ear, so close she felt the heat burn against her skin.

Maya snapped her head to the side just in time. A second slower, and her ear would’ve been

gone.

“Nice reflexes,” his voice drifted from behind her, low and chilling. “Still planning to run, kid?”

Maya stood frozen in place, her back soaked with sweat.

That was it. She was done.

Slowly, she turned around and raised both hands. Maya forced a small, careful smile.

“I’m not running,” she said, her voice steady. “I was just messing around. Please don’t hurt me, sir.”

She paused for half a second, then began to spin a story.

“My family isn’t rich,” she said earnestly. “My dad’s just an office worker. My mom doesn’t have a job. My brother is mentally unstable. I’m the only normal person at home. There’s really no point in kidnapping me.”

Horus watched her, his expression turning slightly strange.

“Not rich?” he repeated with a soft, amused scoff.

Maya nodded quickly.

A smile spread across his face.

“You’re Thomas Jackson’s daughter. If your family isn’t rich, then everyone else must be dirt poor.”

Maya’s smile stiffened and fell apart.

How did he know? No one should’ve known who she really was.

Horus studied her frozen expression with satisfaction, then gave a casual wave of his hand.

“Bring Kaia here,” he ordered. “Let her take a look and confirm if this child is really Mr. Jackson’s daughter.”

A small girl was pushed forward, crying.

Finished

Kaia’s face was streaked with tears, her eyes swollen and red. Her whole body trembled as if she might collapse at any second.

She was forced to stand in front of Maya, her head lowered, too afraid to meet her eyes.

“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” she whispered, so quietly it was almost inaudible.

Guilt weighed heavily on her, but fear weighed even more.

She didn’t want to die. She was simply too scared.

Maya looked at her.

One glance was all it took.

In that instant, everything made sense. She understood why she had been targeted and why the leader had singled her out.

So that was it.

“Kaia,” Maya said, her voice calm in a way that felt almost unsettling.

Kaia slowly lifted her head.

Their eyes met-those amber eyes locking onto her.

“You know what?” Maya said softly. “You’re really annoying. Like, seriously annoying.”

Her grip tightened around the stun baton.

Without any warning, she swung it.

The shock hit immediately. Kaia didn’t even get to scream before her body went limp and she passed out.

Everyone around them went still, stunned into silence.

Maya pulled the baton back and stood there. Her expression returned to something innocent, almost harmless.
