Chapter 272 The Setup
They were just there to let the social climbers do the dirty work. The plan was to let the crowd humiliate
them.
Sam looked at Tracy, his jaw tight. “Tracy, did they seriously bring us here just to treat us like shit? I knew the Xanders were bad but this is a new low. Do they not realize they’re burning every bridge they have left with you?”
They’d been inside for ten minutes and might as well have been ghosts. Nobody said a word to them. Meanwhile, the family was busy sucking up to every other guest in the room because they were terrified of missing a chance to network.
It was a blatant snub. It was the kind of thing that would get under anyone’s skin, especially a sister’s.
Tracy just shrugged. “We didn’t come here to be part of the family, Sam. I stopped giving a damn about them a long time ago. Let them have their fun. I want to see if this big project Yvonne’s been hyping up is actually worth the noise.”
The more they stole, the harder the fall was going to be. Let them feel like they’re on top of the world now. It just makes the hit harder later.
She knew the Xanders were shameless so she’d left them a little surprise. She’d let them have their moment and let them get comfortable before she pulled the rug out. If she called them out now, they’d just lie their way out of it.
She was playing the long game. Friday was the day. Then they were all going down.
Sam let out a cold laugh. “They actually think they’re getting that contract with Waylon? They probably have no idea he’s already talked to us about signing. It’s your show now, Tracy. Their little plan is dead on
arrival.”
He didn’t know the specifics of what she had planned but he didn’t need to. He trusted her. Yvonne had been hogging the spotlight lately but Tracy was about to shut the whole thing down.
“Thanks for having my back,” Tracy said.
In a room full of people waiting for her to fail, having Sam’s actual trust was the only thing that mattered.
“Well look who it is. Ms. Tracy.” Renee’s voice cut through the air. It was sharp and nasty. “What? Did you see Yvonne’s project launch and decide you had to come ruin the party? If I were you, I’d be hiding at home. You’re just embarrassing yourself. You’re so pathetic and jealous of Yvonne that you have to follow her around like a pathetic simp. Do you have any self-respect at all?”
If Yvonne hadn’t filled her in, Renee wouldn’t have known how much Tracy had stepped up her game lately. This woman had already landed her in a cell once and sent Quincy to prison just a few days ago. The memory of the time she’d spent inside made Renee’s blood boil.
Tracy turned around. Renee was decked out in a grey gown and jewelry that Tracy recognized. Yvonne had
worn that exact set before.
Tracy let out a dry laugh. “Oh, Renee’s out of lockup. What’s the matter? Didn’t get enough the first time?

She knew Renee had just gotten out so seeing her wasn’t a shock. The Gaunts were nothing if not predictable.
Renee’s face turned bright red. She pointed a finger and shook with rage. “You bitch. Just you wait.”
Yvonne walked over then and put a hand on Renee’s arm to settle her. “Renee, don’t waste your breath. They’re just here to make a scene because they weren’t invited. Once we sign that AI medical contract, they’ll be out of business anyway.”
The message was clear. Sam and Tracy were losers who didn’t know when they weren’t wanted.
Sam started to snap back but Tracy cut him off. She reached into her bag, pulled out the invitation, and shoved it into Yvonne’s chest.
“I wonder who let you off your leash, since you’re suddenly having memory problems? A word of advice, Yvonne. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Throwing a massive party before you’ve actually signed anything is a great way to end up looking like a total idiot. There’s always someone better and you’re not even second best. Why do you think the contract is yours? Because you’re the loudest person in the room?”
