Yvonne had been a nervous wreck waiting for Chase to wake up, but his confusion was the best gift she could have asked for. The weight lifted off her chest instantly.
She leaned in, testing the waters. “You really don’t remember anything?”
Chase shook his head, wincing as the movement sent a fresh spike of pain through his skull. “My head… it feels like it’s going to split open. Why does it hurt this much?”
The more he tried to force the memories, the more his vision blurred. He didn’t know who had done this to him, but he knew one thing: when he found out, he was going to make them pay double.
Yvonne forced herself to stay calm. She dug her nails into her thigh to keep her voice steady and let the tears fall. “Chase, Tracy came over that day. I don’t know what happened, but you two started arguing. She just… she snapped. She grabbed a vase and smashed it over your head. When she saw all the blood, she panicked and ran. Please don’t hate her. It’s my fault… I should have stopped her before things got out of hand.”
Since Chase had a blank slate, she would write Tracy’s name all over it. It wasn’t her fault Tracy was such an easy target. The woman was already headed for rock bottom; a little more dirt wasn’t going to make a difference.
Chase’s face twisted with a murderous rage. He slammed a fist against the hospital wall. “Tracy! How dare she? How dare she do this to me?”
The exertion caused the wound on his head to reopen. Fresh blood began to soak through the thick layers of white gauze.
“Don’t get worked up!” Yvonne cried, feigning panic. “I’m sure she didn’t mean it. she was just angry. Stay still, your wound is bleeding. I’ll go get the doctor!”
Seeing Yvonne’s distress only made Chase’s fury burn hotter. The world started to spin, and the sheer intensity of his anger combined with the blood loss sent him back into unconsciousness. He would remain in a feverish, comatose state for several more days.
The day finally came for Renee’s release. Chandler, Hailey, and Yvonne were all there to meet her at the prison gates.
Hailey’s heart shattered when she saw her daughter. Renee’s hair was a matted mess, she smelled like a sewer, and she had withered away to skin and bone. The second Renee spotted her mother, she collapsed into her arms, sobbing hysterically.
“Mom, it was horrible! They treated me worse than a pig. They made me do hard labor every single day. Look at me… I’m a skeleton! This is all Tracy’s fault. You can’t let her get away with this!”
In that cell, Renee had spent every waking hour dreaming of revenge. She wanted Tracy to feel the same cold iron bars, to taste the same misery she had endured for the past month. She wanted her blood.

Seeing her pampered daughter reduced to this state only fueled Hailey’s hatred. Tracy had started this war, and they were going to finish it.
Yvonne stepped forward and took Renee’s hand. “Renee, you’re finally out. Your brother and I missed you so much. If Tracy hadn’t used her connections with the Johnsons, you never would have been behind bars. But it’s okay now. You’re just in time to see our new project launch.”
“I’m going to kill that bitch,” Renee hissed through gritted teeth. “She put me in that hellhole. I’m going to make her regret the day she was born.”
Chandler took the small bag of Renee’s belongings. “Let’s save the talk for later. Let’s just get out of here.”
The joint launch for Xander Corp and Gaunt Corp was a massive affair. The ballroom was packed with the city’s elite, all buzzing about the new AI project.
When Tracy and Sam walked in, the room was already thick with conversation. With the launch happening today and the rumors of a major government contract being signed this Friday, the Xanders and the Gaunts were the men of the hour. Everyone wanted a piece of the action.
Vector Tech, on the other hand, was treated like a footnote. No one bothered to look their way. The crowd was too busy swarming Yvonne and Chandler, showering them with empty flattery. Yvonne stood at the center of it all, soaking in the adoration like she was born for it.
