Chapter 35

Her shrieking makes me wince, noting how we’re surrounded by the open doorways of a few different

feral wolves.

“Bianca, lower your voice,” I tell her.

“I don’t take orders from you,” she loudly throws back at me. “I don’t care what Kane says. You’re not my

Luna.”

“I don’t care about that,” I tell her through gritted teeth. “If you don’t lower your voice then -”

“Then what?” she presses on. “You’ll go crying to Kane and tell on me? You’re so pathetic!”

Following her last words, I hear a loud bang, causing my head to whip in the direction of the crash. It came from one of the rooms with an open doorway, causing me to step toward it. But I’m too late.

Already, a wolf is slinking out of the room, snapping and growling. Due to Bianca’s yelling, it clearly set the wolf off, causing him to relapse. His eyes meet mine and I only have seconds to throw myself at Bianca and get her to duck.

Just as we crash to the floor, the wolf flies over us, clearly intending on trying to slash at us both. It growls in annoyance that it missed, just as Bianca demands that I get off of her.

“I just saved your ass,” I whisper coldly. “You could stop complaining for five seconds.”

“Like I need you to save me,” Bianca fires back. “I can handle myself.”

I decide to let her prove that claim as the wolf wraps back around and lunges for us again. This time, it’s even closer to digging its teeth into Bianca’s arm, causing her to loudly yelp.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to calm the wolf, get it to slow enough that I can get him to focus on me. However, due to Bianca’s screaming, I can’t get his attention.

I nearly have a chance to grab him but he suddenly turns on me, swiping toward my bare neck with his nails. But he doesn’t manage to meet my skin as arms wrap around me, pulling me away as someone also tackles the wolf to the ground.

I watch as Kane pins the feral wolf, subduing him as I realize whose arms are around me. The scent of Alexander fills my noise. It’s comforting – not like Kane’s head-dizzying scent, but it’s familiar and safe.

However, I can’t just stay in the protection of Alexander’s arms. With the wolf pinned, I need to offer him what help I can. I gently press my way out of Alexander’s hold as I immediately go to Kane’s side.

“What are you -” Kane begins.

I ignore his words as I reach to place my hand at the nape of the feral wolf’s neck, breathing deep as I can sense the shift over my eyes. I can tell they flash purple by the way that Kane shifts next to me.

However, I’m then closing my eyes, allowing my ability to come over the feral wolf as I feel him relax

beneath my touch and inevitability doze off to sleep, calm once more.

As I open my eyes, I see the surprise over Bianca’s face as she’s finally quiet. Even Alexander blinks at me with wonder. And then there’s Kane.

Slowly, I look in his direction, seeing the furrow over his brow as he seems to drink me in. He doesn’t seem surprised nor angry. It’s something else entirely…like he’s seeing me in a new light.

I’m not sure what to do with that, not sure what to say. It seems like I don’t have to, though, as the Alpha King’s voice comes over us all.

“So it is true,” he says as I look up at him. “You do possess the ability to calm them.”

I swallow, nodding at him.

“I must say, I’m impressed,” he states, looking to Kane. “It seems as though your wife may be more powerful than we first imagined.”
