Chapter 83

Evelyn’s POV

Dizzy from being slammed against the wall, it takes a second for my vision to clear. As I blink my eyes, the world comes back into focus and I find myself face to face with someone,

Kane.

He has me pinned against the wall, anger softening on his face as confusion begins to replace it. He must have thought I was some sort of intruder.

“What the hell were you doing?” Kane asks pointedly, searching my eyes.

I swallow, realizing how dry my throat had become, the rapid rate of my heart. I try not to let my chest brush his as I continue to catch my breath.

“The front door was locked,” I begin to explain. “I was trying to find a way in. That window was my last resort.”

1 nod up toward the second floor, indicating what I mean. Kane seems to get the picture as he glances to the window and then back down to me. Annoyance is clear on his face.

“What do you mean the door is locked?” he asks. “We always have someone there attending it – letting everyone in or out.”

“Yeah, well, not this time,” I state back simply. “I tried to open and even knocked. No one was there.”

“Don’t you have a key?” he asks.

“Yes,” I press. “But it’s the wrong one. It doesn’t fit.”

“That’s not right…,” Kane trails out, looking away in confusion. However, I can tell by his tone that it’s not because he doesn’t believe me. But because he can tell something is off.

“Maybe I came in the middle of a shift change?” I offer. “Could have been bad timing on my part,

Kane looks at me, thinking for a moment. “Maybe,” he offers.

I shrug back, knowing it doesn’t matter or make a difference now. Even if he has me pushed up against a wall like some criminal, at least I know that I can get inside now that Kane is here.

Speaking of being up against a wall…

“You plan on letting me go anytime soon?” I ask, slightly teasing him.

He has my wrists in his hands, my arms pressed up to the wall. His body is almost against mine, caging me in as he’s only inches away.

To my words, Kane scowls, clearly not amused. However, he does let me go and then takes a purposeful step backward.

“I thought you were someone trying to break in,” Kane says, confirming my suspicions. “I looked out the window and saw someone start climbing the tree.”

“So you came out here yourself?” I ask as I peel myself off the wall. “Why didn’t you send some of the other wolves out here to handle it instead of yourself?”

I’m grateful that he hadn’t as I would much rather deal with him instead of his crew. They were still indifferent

toward me so who knows what they would have done.

Still, it’s a little odd that Kane wouldn’t have his subordinates deal with something like this. Why go by himself? It could have been a lot more dangerous.

Kane shakes his head. “I don’t make a habit of asking my pack to do things I’m perfectly capable of doing myself,” he replies, “Plus, I’d much rather take the front lines instead of ordering someone else to do it.”

His words don’t gradually soak in this time, but hit me hard as I feel their weight. Kane’s willingness to face hardships over his pack is the sign of a true leader and something to be commended. But it’s also a little worrying.

What if he got hurt?

I don’t like the strange feeling that thought causes in my stomach, leading me to shove it away. Instead, I keep my thoughts to myself as Kane gestures me toward the side door.

“Your training session is supposed to start in ten minutes,” he comments. “I assume you want to get changed.”

I had nearly forgotten about our session with the whole door issue. But he’s right – it’s almost time for our training.

“I should,” I state, following him inside. I’m currently wearing jeans and a blouse – not exactly the most ideal

outfit for a workout.

“I’ll be quick,” I toss out. “Meet you there in a few.”

Once I’m changed and my hair is properly pulled out of my face, I go to the pack gym room, just as I promised.

Kane is there, stretching and gesturing for me to join him. Without fuss, I walk over and begin stretching out my calves.
