Chapter 89

Kane’s POV

My head whips in the direction of the smoke, my eyes already searching wildly despite not being able to see anything. Without another moment of hesitation, I run into the wreckage.

“Kane!” Henri shouts, but I’m already gone. I move through the smoke, thankful that some of it is clearing so I’m able to see more than two feet in front of me.

I don’t know what I’m doing. I should be looking for the rogue wolves, ensuring that others are safe. Yet I’m here, searching for Evelyn. Something deep in my bones tells me that I wouldn’t be able to drag myself anywhere else even if I wanted to.

Small fires burn wooden benches, bushes, trees, and the town square gazebo. However, those things don’t matter right now – they’re all replaceable. A life – Evelyn’s life – is not.

I continue searching, swearing under my breath as my skin grows warmer and warmer from the lingering fire, my lungs sore from breathing in the smoke. Still, I see no sign of her, which makes me only hope that Diana was mistaken and Evelyn is safe somewhere else.

However, my eyes then snag on something – light blue and fluttering in the residual wind. My gaze clips over and I freeze as I see Evelyn laying across the stone path, covered in ash and unconscious.

Without a single thought, I sprint over to her, kneeling to her side once I reach her.

“Evelyn,” I try, placing my palm against the side of her face. “Evelyn, fuck. Wake up, little wolf.”

She doesn’t stir or reply. My only solace is noting that her ribs expand and contract, signaling that she’s still breathing. I need to get her out of here.

Cautiously, I pick her up, carrying her in my arms as her head falls to rest against my chest.

“You’re okay,” I tell her as I begin to head back out of the smoke. “You’re safe.”

Evelyn doesn’t reply, but I hadn’t expected her to. Still, I’m quick footed as I make my way back out of the wreckage, soon escaping the smoke and heat as I come out onto the clear street. There, Diana, Alexander, and the women are still waiting.

“Oh my Goddess, Evelyn!” Díana exclaims the moment she sees me.

“Call an ambulance,” I tell Diana. “She needs medical attention immediately.”

Despite her flustered state, Diana accepts my orders and calls 911 as tears continue to slide down her face. Meanwhile, I look down to Evelyn’s face, my jaw ticking as I study her dirtied cheeks, a cut across her nose.

Fuck these rogue wolves.

“Your Beta went to meet up with other members of your circle,” Alexander says then. I had forgotten he was even standing there. “He said something about a lead on the rogue wolves.”

I say nothing. Instead, I just send a mindlink to Henri, making sure that’s true. He quickly confirms that it is.

“You should take Evie to the hospital,” Alexander continues. “Don’t bother with an ambulance. It would be better for you to take her. I can help your pack and hold down everything here.”

My eyes snap back to him, my brow furrowing. I don’t like how fucking eager he sounds to take my place and lead my back, Nor do I like the stupid fucking smile he tries to hide.

Alpha Prince or not, I have never trusted Alexander and I’m sure as hell not going to start now.

Even if a strange part of me does want to go with Evelyn and make sure she’s safe. But I know I can’t. I need to be here for my pack and make sure that Alexander stands the fuck down.

“There’s no need for that,” I tell Alexander firmly. “I’ll be here for my pack.”

Alexander doesn’t seem too pleased and even snorts. “Suit yourself,” he says.

It’s then that the ambulance pulls up and people are quick to rush out, coming right over to me to collect Evelyn. At first, I seem to instinctively resist handing her over, but make myself relent as Diana runs up to join us.

“I’ll go with her,” Diana reassures me. “She’ll be okay.”

I give her a nod, grateful for her help. I then stand and watch as the crew loads Evelyn into the ambulance and firmly shut the doors. Even now, I feel a tug, an urge to run after them and stay by Evelyn’s side.

You can’t, I remind myself. You can’t and why would you want to?

That question remains unanswered. Instead, Alexander steps up to my side, watching with me as the ambulance drives away.

He clicks his tongue. “I hope you made the right decision.”

Evelyn’s POV

Confusion takes hold as my eyes begin to flutter open. I can hear quiet beeping coming from around me and my back is resting against a stiff mattress. I have no idea where I am, what’s going on.
