Chapter 115

Evelyn’s POV

Oh, my…

At first, my eyes grew wide from the mere shock and disbelief. But the longer Kane took possession of my lips, my vision began to blur, and my eyes fluttered shut.

Everyone around the table broke out into surprise gasps and low mutters.

His hand remained on the back of my head, locking me in place. That same familiar wave of heated want spurred beneath my stomach. The very same feeling that seeped through my body when I had made the bold move to kiss him.

All the anger that I’d been holding onto momentarily paused.

When Kane pulled back, my surroundings became clear. Everyone sitting around the table was openly staring at us. Most of the medical team wore similar looks of glee and charmed excitement.

Bianca, on the other hand, was fuming. If her face got any redder, I was certain she would have popped a blood vessel.

Well, there was certainly no chance of her planting rumors about Kane and I’s relationship. At least, not for a little while.

The warmth was suddenly gone, and I was left with an unsettling feeling in my chest. Was this what Kane felt after I kissed him? Cold. Empty.

Was the kiss proof of our ‘relationship’ or was this just him trying to get even with me?

Out of the corner of my eye, I watched Bianca storm off with her friends following close after her. I turned my attention back to the man in front of me and tried to keep my expression neutral.

“Um… Was there something you needed?” I asked weakly.

A soft smile curved his lips. “A letter came for you in the post earlier.”

He handed over the white envelope, which I promptly opened. It was a letter from Cheryl, reminding me about the invitation to come visit her at her estate.

With everything that’s gone on, I’d completely forgotten about it. Was I still interested in going? More so, did I still want Kane to go with me?

I knew, initially, I wanted him to attend the trip with me. Things became so unwantedly complicated, though, that I wasn’t sure where I stood on the whole idea now.

“What is it?” Kane asked.

“It’s a reminder from Cheryl,” I said.

“One of your mother’s friends, right? Is this about the trip?”

I nodded. “She’s reached out to remind me about coming to visit her. I believe the dates are for this coming weekend.”

“Are you still planning on going?”

He spoke as though I hadn’t included him. I folded the letter back up. “I’m not sure,” I said quietly.

1 got up from the table with the intention of heading back to the medical ward. There were still a few more patients who needed to be checked on before I could confidently call it a day.

“Evelyn,” Alexander called out from down the hall.

My heart dropped into my stomach. I instantly stopped and turned to face him. “Alexander.”

My throat grew dry with trepidation. I wasn’t entirely sure if I was ready to face him yet. But it seemed like fate was making the decision for me.

He opened his mouth to speak, but quickly closed it. “Is there any chance that we could, maybe, talk?”

I quickly glanced around to ensure that there was no one else around. “…Okay,” I answered quietly.

I led us out of one of the side doors and walked over to an available bench. I gestured for him to sit down next to

“Evelyn, I want to apologize for making you feel uncomfortable before.”

My brows lifted in surprise. “Oh, um…It’s okay.”

He shook his head. “No, it wasn’t,” he said. “I know I’ve been picking on your relationship with Kane for a while now, and then I proceeded to make you feel uncomfortable being around me.

“I think I was just surprised that you would make such an offer to me in the first place,” I acknowledged softly. Alexander, we’ve been friends for most of our lives, and I guess I never expected you to feel that way toward me.”

I took my bottom lip between my teeth and carefully contemplated my next words. I had to be honest with him.

“In terms of your earlier confession…I’m not sure that I feel the same way towards you,” I said.

My nerves were a coiling, frazzled mess. “I’m afraid that my own feelings could end up causing a rift between us. And I can’t bear the thought of losing you because of that.”

He rested his hand on my shoulder, trying to shake me from my anguished state. “Evie, it’s alright.”

My heart thundered frantically in my chest. “Really? You’re sure?”

“I promise. Look, my personal feelings toward you shouldn’t change how things are between us,” he explained. “ I know it wasn’t entirely fair of me to throw those words at you, and I hadn’t meant to place any kind of pressure or expectation on you.”

“I appreciate that,” I told him.

Being able to clear the air with Alexander had taken a tremendous weight off my shoulders. It also made me realize that I needed to mend another bridge with someone…

I left Alexander with the promise of meeting up again later on. Meanwhile, I quickly made my way to Kane’s office. This time, I reached out my hand and knocked on the door before entering.

He glanced up from the papers on his desk to see me standing in the doorway,

“Evelyn.”

“Is this a bad time?” I asked.

“Not at all.” He sat back in his chair and prompted me to sit down in one of the chairs in front of him. “Is there

something wrong?”

“Yes,” I confessed. “I…I want to apologize.”

Kane went still. “Apologize?”

“I shouldn’t have yelled at you yesterday in here. I saw you and Bianca, and I immediately assumed the worst. You were even trying to tell me that nothing happened, and I refused to believe it.”

He looked to be choosing his next words meticulously. “In that case, I should be apologizing to you as well,” he admitted.

“What?” My brows raised. “Why?”

“You’d mentioned quite a few things during our argument. You’re right, I don’t penalize Bianca for her misconduct. At the very least, I should keep her from constantly hanging around where it’s only the two of us.”

I offered a small smile. “I appreciate that. If anything, it would diminish a lot of the rumors that spread around.”

“Are things alright between you and Alexander?” he questioned. “I noticed the two of you stepped out to talk after the lunch rush.”

“I think so. I promise that I will limit the amount of time he and I spend together in the future,” I acknowledged.

He nodded his head. “Would you be willing to have dinner with me tonight? In here?”

My breath caught in my lungs, causing my chest to tighten, as I stared blankly back at Kane. It wasn’t as though he and I hadn’t gone out to dinner before… Yet, this felt entirely different.

Far more personal.

“Okay,” I agreed softly.

“Good. There are a few things I want to discuss. Return after you’re finished with your rounds in the medical ward.”

I got up from my chair and headed toward the door. While my conscience felt lighter, there was still something itching in my mind.

“Why did you kiss me?”
