Chapter 136

Kane’s POV

Was I wrong to mention the contract?

‘Yes!’ My wolf’s growl echoed in the back of my mind. ‘What the fuck was the point of that?’

I ran my hand through my hair and shook my head. “She needed to be reminded of what this whole thing really is,” I responded weakly.

Surely, Evelyn knew how relevant that contract between us still was. I mean, that was the whole driving point of our arrangement, not to mention the two of us putting on our little ‘intimate’ acts around others.

‘You’re the reason why we’re going to end up alone and clinically insane.’

I rolled my eyes and scoffed. “Oh, please. You’re being dramatic.”

‘You watched the light leave her eyes as you brought up that ridiculous contract,’ he snapped. ‘For God’s sake, the scent of her arousal is still lingering in the room. Don’t you get it, you insufferable idiot? She wants us! And yet, your first reaction to that is to push her away!’

A rush of guilt came flooding through me. My stomach churned as though I’d been punched repeatedly in the gut. I clenched my eyes shut and pitched the bridge of my nose, hoping to stave off a pending migraine.

The truth of the matter was, I’d grown to care for Evelyn beyond the minimal requirement of the contract. I wasn’t entirely sure how it happened or even when it happened…

Evelyn’s concern for the pack had always been her most admirable quality. Yet, recently, I’ve been noticing things I hadn’t before.

“Shit,” I cursed under my breath. I had to fix things.

‘Go to her now and soothe it all over,’ my wolf advised.

My feet were moving before I could process another step. Based on Evelyn’s lingering scent, I followed her toward the washrooms. I stopped short when I heard a familiar voice.

Alexander.

I bit back a venomous snarl. What the hell was he doing, mulling around Evelyn? That damn prince was becoming more and more of a pain with each passing day. Evelyn tried to assure me on numerous counts that Alexander was nothing more than a friend, but it was clear as day that he didn’t feel the same.

While maintaining my stance in the shadows, I glanced into the room to find the man’s arms wrapped securely around Evelyn while his chin rested on top of her head. Her features were pinched and pained with an expression of sadness.

The muscles in my stomach continued to twist and churn, knowing that I was likely the cause. Yet, the very sight of seeing my own mate in the arms of another put my nerves on edge. And the fact that it was Alexander made it all the more irritating.

It shouldn’t bother me, I thought to myself. Evelyn was merely a means to an end.

‘If that was really true, then why is there pain in our chest?’

I snarled under my breath and stalked off down the hallway. “Whatever,” I muttered.

I had bigger issues to deal with than worry about one person’s problems. The ongoing trouble with the rogues had been a simmering issue these past several months. Everyone knew that it was surmounting to something big.

Instead of heading back to my office, I decided to head to the training tents. I needed to sharpen my moves as well as burn off the anger that had settled in my muscles.

That evening after dinner, Evelyn and I headed back to the gym to focus on her personal training. Based on what I was able to observe, she spoke very little with the others from the medical ward.

Even Diana was able to sense a change in Evelyn’s behavior and inquired if she was alright. But Evelyn simply brushed her off the topic, and kept quiet the rest of the time.

Now, it was just the two of us and the unbearable silence that neither of us was willing to break. I had us run through our usual drills in the beginning. Evelyn’s form was immaculate; however, her focus and attention were elsewhere.
