Chapter 184

Evelyn’s POV

Dr. Borsheim wasn’t entirely sure how to treat me. In all his years as a medical professional, he never once came across someone who was undergoing a breakthrough transition like I was.

“Now, Evelyn, I know this may be a personal topic for you; however, it’s imperative that we try to understand what you could be expecting from this drastic change,” Dr. Borsheim said.

I’ve never seen the poor man appear so uncertain.

“Did your mother ever happen to tell you anything about her own transition?” he asked.

I sat back against the headboard and tried to search my memories. As sad as it was, so many of my memories regarding my mother were faded and spotty due to the takeover from my horrible step-mother and step-siblings.

I tilted my head to the side, struggling to recall anything that may be considered useful. But I kept drawing a blank.

“Not really. If there was anything that I could remember her mentioning, it was that she claimed to have just been tired a lot,” I said. “But, then again, that could have just been because of her pregnancy.”

Both Dr. Borsheim and Kane slumped. I felt unfairly guilty for not being more helpful.

“Well then, I suppose this is going to be an active case,” the doctor informed us.

“An active case?” Kane questioned with mild panic in his voice. “What the hell does that entail?”

“Basically, we’re going to need to conduct the same kind of tests and checkups that we had when we were trying to awaken Evelyn’s wolf,” he explained. “Only now, these checkups are going to be more frequent. Keep in mind, we’re all going into this blindly. Unless there is someone who could potentially help fill in the gaps that we’re missing?”

Suddenly, it dawned on me. My eyes grew wide and nearly shot up from my spot.

“Evelyn, what is it?”

“I think I might know who to ask about this,” I answered eagerly. Their puzzled looks prompted me to continue. “Cheryl, Brooke, and Angie. They were all really close friends with my mother since they were young.”

Kane rubbed the edge of his jaw in thought. “That’s true. If anyone would possibly know anything about this, it would be them.”

Dr. Borsheim seemed satisfied enough with the idea. He gave a curt nod. “Good. I suggest that once things have gone back to normal around here, you reach out to these women and explain what’s happened.”

“And, in the meantime?” I asked.

He offered a small, supportive smile. “In the meantime, I want you to start logging yourself. Your moods, sleep schedule, eating habits, energy levels-anything that you can think of.”

I almost let out a humorous laugh. It seemed like I was going to be conducting a whole new case study. Only this time, I was the subject of interest.

“Okay.”

“Good. Now, I expect you to get plenty of rest, and I’ll have it scheduled for you to come visit me in two days,” he concluded.

Dr. Borsheim placed my mother’s will down on the dresser before leaving. When it was only Kane and me, the room fell completely silent while something in the air shifted.

“Evelyn…” He spoke my name in a way that sent chills down my spine. “I’m still trying to figure out whether or not to reprimand you for how reckless you were, or if I should kiss you.”

I raised my brows. “I think I would much prefer the latter in that case.”

Kane lightly scoffed and rolled his eyes. “If I kiss you, I could tell you right now that it won’t stop there.” My face flushed. “And since neither one of us is in any position to overly extend ourselves, I’m suggesting we opt for a third choice.”

“Oh? And what does that involve?”

“A much-needed conversation regarding where we last left off,” he stated.

“Ah, you mean before you so briskly yelled in my face and stormed out of this very room?” I inquired pointedly.

“I was angry.”

“You were so quick to assume the absolute worst of me, Kane,” I remarked coolly. “You didn’t even give me a chance to explain.”

He took in a deep breath and let his eyes drop to the floor. “I know.”

“And to rub salt in the wound even further, you proceeded to head off to war without so much as saying a word to me,” I added.

Kane pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. “Please believe me when I say that I felt immediate guilt the moment we arrived at the battlefield. I knew then that I shouldn’t have responded the way I had.”

My shoulders sagged. “Look, you’re always entitled to your feelings,” I told him honestly.

“Being openly vulnerable was never something I was used to doing,” he said. “As the alpha of this pack, I am expected to be strong, ruthless, and unwavering.”

“But you don’t need to be that way when you’re around me,” I said softly. “You don’t need to be this

impenetrable wall when it’s just the two of us.”

He nodded. “I’m sorry for leaving like I did. But, Evelyn, I need to know… Why didn’t you tell me about finding your mother’s will?”

This time, I was the one who lowered my head in slight shame. “Because I was afraid that you would have thought I was trying to use you and our relationship to achieve my own Silver Wolf status. But none of that is true.”

I gently reached out to rest my hand on top of his healing leg.

“Do you remember the time when I kept falling ill because I was overextending my abilities, treating the

feral wolves?”

“You mean the time before we started working together?” he clarified.

I nodded. “When I, essentially, confessed to having feelings for you, I hadn’t found my mother’s will yet.”

Kane went still. I watched his eyes soften with a mixture of affection and astonishment. “But what about that time you brought up having children? We haven’t touched that topic since we first signed that contract.”

“At that point, I had seen the will, but my main concern had nothing to do with unlocking my Silver Wolf status. I was more distraught over the possibility that we might never have the chance of having children because of the upcoming war,” I explained.

Kane graced me with a sympathetic look. I quickly shook my head. “But I don’t want this all to make you feel obligated to have children with me. Honestly, I think the pressure of everything was just getting to

me at the time.”

“I understand,” he commended.

“Everything I have felt for you since then has been completely and undeniably real.”

The corners of his eyes look like they misted with tears. “I feel like such an idiot,” he confessed. He grabbed my hand and pulled himself closer to my side. “I came too close to losing you. That is not something I ever want to experience again.”

My eyes stung. “I know exactly what that feels like. Seeing you so badly injured under that tree, I’m just grateful I got there in time.”

Kane cupped my cheeks and chuckled. “I was told that I have you to thank for that new healing slave you created. My clever Luna.”

My face flushed under the praise. I closed the remaining space between us and pressed a soft kiss to his lips.

His…I really liked the sound of that.
