Epilogue 1-1

Simone

“Kane is your what?!” my mother screeched at the same time my father yelled, ” He got you pregnant?!”

Hell. This was going exactly as well as I’d expected.

I’d messaged my parents that the troops weren’t needed since the Kellan loyalists were fewer than

we’d anticipated, so only the alphas and a few selected enforcers had made the trip here. Irene

and Kenzi had been too tired to travel back immediately, so against their wishes they’d returned to Aerith, cursing the entire way.

Now we were all crammed into Irene’s recovery room in the guest wing, sitting wherever we could find space or just leaning against the walls. I’d chosen to lean, figuring it would be easier to dodge flying objects if this conversation went sideways.

“I’m gone three months and you get yourself knocked up by your fated mate?” Kenzi grunted from her chair beside Irene’s bed. “Couldn’t you wait until I came back?!”

“Shut up, Kenzi. Not everything is about you,” my mother rolled her eyes.

“It damn right is. Weren’t you all planning on how to get me out of this godforsaken kingdom?”

“And me,” Irene added weakly from her bed, though she was smiling despite her exhaustion.

Kenzi completely ignored her, too busy squaring off with my mother. “You’re just jealous I’m a

better mom.”

Mom stood up with a curse that would have made sailors blush. “You old piece of-”

“For fuck’s sake, come on!” Finn interrupted, rolling his eyes from his spot against the window. ” Almost thirty years? And you’re still at each other’s throats?”

“That’s how they show they care,” Amelia added from beside him with fond exasperation. “Thirty years and you still haven’t figured that out.”

“He’s a man. What else can we ask, really?” Janelle mumbled from her corner, earning indignant ” Hey!” from almost every man in the room.

“The point is…” I said loudly, trying to regain control of the conversation before it devolved into complete chaos, “you’re all going to be great aunts and uncles. And yes, Kane is my mate, so my

baby is…”

“Aerith Kingdom’s heir to the throne,” a familiar voice boomed behind us as Kane stepped inside

He walked straight to me, and I automatically moved into his arms, giving him a quick kiss that felt

as natural as breathing.

“Hi, love,” he said softly.

“Hi,” I smiled at him, my heart doing that stupid fluttering thing it always did when he looked at me. “I missed you.”

“Gross,” Dash mumbled, and several words of agreement sounded around the room.

I shot my brother a glare, but I could see the amusement in his eyes. He was getting used to the idea of us together, even if he still felt obligated to give us shit about it.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying, Sisi?” Mom was staring at me with a sad look in her eyes that made my chest tight.

I looked at her, then up at Kane, love and happiness the only things in my heart right now. This was my choice, my future, and I wasn’t going to be shy about it.

“Yes,” I said firmly. “Sorry, Mom. I just can’t walk away from him. I’m going to stay here, in Aerith.

With him.”

The uncomfortable silence that followed was deafening. I could see the hurt on my parents’ faces, the worry about losing their daughter to a foreign kingdom. But I could also see understanding there, because they were mates too. They knew what it felt like to have your entire world revolve

around one person.

“Everyone else who wishes to stay is welcome to do so, of course,” Kane said, trying to ease the

tension.

“Way to go, sis. You’re a queen now,” Dash smirked, ruffling my hair in that annoying big brother way. “I’ll stay here for a month or two, just to see you settle down.”
