Chapter 2
When I got home. Elias’s Bentley was already parked out front.
Through the cracked window, I heard his low, rhythmic breathing.
“Say my name.”
‘Elias…”
“Who do you love most?”
“Elias…”
“That’s my good girl. I’d die for you.”
I stood there, frozen.
The summer sun scorched the ground, but I felt like I was trapped in a blizzard.
An hour later, Elias walked in with a petite woman on his arm.
The moment Sophie saw me sitting in the living room, her eyes filled with tears, like she was the one who’d been
betrayed.
“Why is she here? You said this was our home.”
“Were you lying to me? Are you still not over her?”
“No matter how much I love you-I won’t be your mistress. I’m leaving.”
Elias grabbed her and pulled her tightly into his arms. “What are you thinking? We have a marriage certificate with a
state seal. You’re my wife. Of course this is our home.”
‘She’s just here to pack her things.”
He glanced at me.
No explanation. No apology.
“Samantha, the house in the suburbs is quiet. No neighbors around. Go stay there for a while.”
My mind went blank.
Before the anger came something else-a sharp, crushing pain in my chest.
Three years ago, when we moved into this house, Elias held me with red-rimmed eyes.

‘Samantha, this is our home now. You, me, and the kids we’ll have someday.”
And now, the man who gave me a home…
Three years later, he kicked me out of it.
“Samantha, my wife is upset. I won’t say it twice.”
He was smiling, but his voice was low and calm, leaving no room for argument.
A warning.
My throat felt stuffed with cotton, burning.
Somewhere deep down, I realized he wasn’t joking.
After a long silence, I nodded. “Okay.”
As I stood up, Elias’s gaze fell on my back. Something flickered in his eyes. He stepped forward and grabbed my arm, his
voice softening.
“There’s an event this afternoon. Come with me.”
I was about to refuse when he cut me off.
“It’s Sophie’s first time at something like this. Help her pick a dress. Take her inside.”
I stared at him.
The whole thing was so absurd it almost felt funny.
Then I remembered I didn’t have much time left, so I didn’t argue.
Before the event, Sophie claimed she had nothing to wear.
She went through my closet and, with perfect precision, picked out the most extravagant gift Elias had ever given me-a
one-of-a-kind couture gown worth six million dollars, along with the matching jewelry.
She walked in on his arm. I carried her train.
She was the star of the night.
I was the joke.
“Look at Mr. Carter-making his mistress carry his wife’s dress. She didn’t even blink.”
*Mr. Carter? He married the mistress. Samantha? She’s just what’s left after a ten-year free trial. Nothing special

“Ten years and she got nothing. How stupid do you have to be? Better off dead.”
I left the ballroom and hid in the restroom.
By accident. I overheard someone joking with Elias.
‘Elias, she’s been with you ten years. You really married the new girl?”
‘Girls want security. It’s just a piece of paper. What does it really change?”
“If Samantha leaves, won’t you regret it?”
My heart tightened.
Then I heard him laugh, casual and careless.
“Samantha’s whole world is me. Ten years. I’ve trained her. She’s like an old, dirty rag now.”
‘I know her. When I’m done playing, she’ll still be there, waiting.”
I didn’t hear the rest.
I walked to the sink, splashed water on my face, then bit down on my own hand.
Watching water and tears mix as they fell into the porcelain.
No sound
Elias.
This time, you’re wrong.
That dirty rag you threw away?
She wouldn’t be waiting.
I turned to leave the restroom-and walked straight into a slap.
