Chapter 6
In the days that followed. Elías lost himself in Sophie’s world.
Event nights. Auctions. Getaways.
Night after night, tangled together-never enough.
Two weeks later, he showed up at an underground gathering.
“You hear this? The Moretti family’s daughter-the one who disappeared twenty years ago-they found her.”
“The Morettis? Top of the Five Families? They never had another kid while searching for her. Now she’s back, they’re
throwing a welcome party worth tens of millions.”
Sophie rolled her eyes. “Gone for twenty years? She’s probably been passed around and ruined. And they’re throwing her
a party? The Morettis are idiots.”
Elias frowned.
For the first time, he found her… ugly.
A few weeks of luxury had wiped her memory clean-like she’d never worked herself to the bone for a few thousand
dollars a month.
The innocence and pride he once admired-the same things that made her reject him at first-were gone in less than a
month.
Crushed under jewelry and designer labels.
Now she was spreading rumors about the Morettis’ real daughter.
It bored him.
Worse-it disgusted him.
The thrill was gone.
Without the novelty, his mind drifted back to me.
My background was worse than Sophie’s. I grew up in an orphanage.
But I never talked behind people’s backs.
Even when we finally had money. I never spent it out of spite.

I kept everything in order. Made his life easier. Saw the weight he carried.

A dull ache spread through Elias’s chest
He thought about the wedding he’d missed
The one he spent months planning.
The one he destroyed with a single sentence.
My face in the car that day-shock turning into emptiness-it drove into his chest like a spike.
How much did that hurt?
It had been over a week since the wedding passed.
No one had mentioned it to him.
A wave of nausea hit. Guilt crept in.
He called his assistant. “Send that ruby necklace from the auction to the house in the suburbs. It’s for Samantha.”
He paused.
“No. I’ll go myself. She’s still mad about the club… that fake miscarriage stunt. It’s been long enough. I’ll settle it.”
Sophie was close enough to hear. Panic flashed across her face.
“Honey, you said you only love me. I’m your legal wife. I don’t want you going to that house to see that slut.*
His expression turned cold. “What did you just call her?”
“If anyone deserves to be cursed, it’s us. Don’t say things like that again.”
Sophie’s confidence cracked completely.
When force didn’t work, she switched tactics-playing weak.
‘Honey, don’t be mad. What she said to me-threatening my parents-it still makes me upset sometimes. Please don’t go
see her I’m scared you’ll leave me if you do.”
Usually, that worked on him
But now, watching her shift strategies-watching the panic in her eyes-something felt off
Before he could respond, his phone rang
His assistant sounded tense
Mr. Carter… there’s no one at the suburban house. I checked. Not even a servant. It’s been like that for at least a year’
