Chapter 204

Ellie’s POV

The academy, unfortunately, was closed that day due to it being a Sunday, which meant that I had no choice but to stay home.

I did try to hide in my room all day, hoping to go unnoticed, but it didn’t work. The moment I cracked open the door to sneak out for some breakfast, I was spotted by Marcus, who beelined over to me with a list like he had been waiting there for me.

“Alpha Dominic asked me to give you this,” he said, holding it out to me.

I took it and sighed. It was a to-do list. Because of course Dominic, despite being out of the house today, would make sure I did my due diligence despite all of the effort I had made in ensuring that I seemed utterly incapable.

All of the duties on the list were typical for a new Luna: check in with the household staff. Arrange next week’s schedule. Visit the clinic and the barracks. Basic stuff that normally wouldn’t bother me, but I feared that if I did it, it would just reverse all of my hard work.

But that didn’t mean that I needed to do my tasks well.

I called Sarah, who accompanied me throughout many of my tasks. We went to the servant quarters first, where I had a meeting with the head butler. He asked me for advice on dealing with some unruly new staff members, but I just told him he could figure it out himself, and then left him standing there, clearly very put off by my lack of interest. After that, we moved onto the scheduling portion.

Sarah watched with a raised eyebrow as I casually went over Dominic’s weekly schedule, humming to myself. I deliberately left some spots open and overlapped others in the kind of way that would go unnoticed until the last moment, when he would realize that he had two meetings scheduled at the same time between two Alphas who were known to hate each other with a burning passion.

When I was finished, I put a little flourish on the last letter, then set my pen down and looked up.

Sarah folded her arms and shot me a look.

“What?” I asked, standing.

“Oh, nothing,” she said with a shrug, hopping down from where she’d been perched on the desk. “It’s just that you’re not exactly being subtle these days.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

My friend gave me an arch look. “So your social commentary performances aren’t deliberate?”

“Oh, gods.” I brushed my hair back from my face and laughed. “You saw the article, I take it?”

“Not just the article,” Sarah replied. “People are talking, Ellie.”

“About…?”

“About you, dummy!” She stood, following me out of the office. We began making our way toward the clinic, which was the one place where I actually intended to do my job properly. Sick people were one thing

that I genuinely cared about.

“There’s not much to talk about,” I said coolly.

Sarah stopped in front of me, blocking me from going further. “Ellie, half the women in the pack think you’re making some kind of statement against Dominic.”

I stopped walking. “Really?”

“Really.” Her expression softened a little. “They think you’re empowering. That you’re not just his submissive little shadow anymore. And maybe you’re finally teaching him a lesson about how he treats people.”

I wasn’t expecting that. My only intention had been to find a way out of this marriage before I went through the same things I had in my past life, but I had to admit-Sarah’s confession warmed my heart a little bit.

Because these were the same people who once had no respect for me, who thought of me as nothing but a pathetic shadow of a man who treated me poorly. In my past life, many of them had abused me emotionally and socially.
