Chapter 273

“Do you believe it?” I asked.

Dominic shrugged. “I think, if you really want someone, it doesn’t matter what you eat. You’ll still want them

I blushed a little, despite my best efforts not to, at the meaningful look in his eyes. We fell silent after that for a few moments i swirled my drink in my glass and looked around, watching as the singer moved to the piano and began to play a simple, quiet melody.

Just then, my phone buzzed in my purse. I peeked inside to see Sarah’s name lighting up the screen.

“Who’s that?” Dominic asked, leaning over.

Immediately, my mind went to the test regarding the knife. I grabbed my purse and quickly stood. “No one. I’ll be right back”

Before he could respond, I shimmied out of the booth and hurried toward the bathrooms. There was a line, so stopping off to the side in the narrow, dimly lit hallway, I pulled out my phone and answered.

“Hello?”

“Ellie,” Sarah’s voice came through. “You busy?”

“Not really. What’s up?”

“I finished testing that knife you gave me.” She paused, and I straightened a little, preparing myself. “There was no woltsbane toxin on it. There was nothing, actually. It’s just a knife.”

I bit my lip, thinking about that. In my past life, it was not the stab wound that took my life, but the toxin. Back then, I’d thought that the toxin was applied to the knife by the assassin. But then, in this life, he’d seemed so confused when I brought it up. Like he’d never even heard of it before.

Now, I knew there was a reason for that.

The assassin hadn’t applied the toxin to the knife. Which meant that it was very likely the toxin had been administered after the wound in my past life.

But… how? And by whom?

“Ellie?” Sarah’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. “You still there?”

“Uh… Yeah.” I blinked and leaned against the wall. “I’m just… thinking.”

I could hear her sigh through the phone. “Look, are you gonna tell me why you wanted me to look into this? Because it’s sort of eating me up, and now you’re acting weird.”

I bit my lip. I wanted to tell Sarah the truth. I really did.

And for a moment, I genuinely almost did just that. Maybe it would ruin our friendship Maybe it would hurt het it she knew that I’d kept something like this from her for so long. Or, hell, maybe she would think I was lying or completely off my rocket

But I had to get the words out. I couldn’t take not telling her anymore. The longer the bandaid stayed on, the harder it would be to rip off.

I opened my mouth. “Sarah, there’s something I have to

“Are you talking to him?” Dominic’s voice was low but sharp in my ear. Before I could react, he snatched my phone away and pressed it to the side of his face without looking at the screen. “She’s busy,” he snapped. “With her husband.”

Then, he hung up.

For a long moment, I just stared at Dominic, mouth hanging open, genuinely in disbelief. After all that talk about “worrying”

about me, here he was, snatching my phone away like I’d been on a call with my side piece

“Fuck,” I said, grabbing my phone out of his hand and throwing it into my purse with perhaps more force than neceREATY “Yong really are just as self centered and delusional as I think you are, aren’t you?”

Dominic’s lips parted. But I was done. I didn’t stay to hear whatever excuse he had next.

“This ‘date’ is over,” I said. My shoulder slammed into his as I stormed past him and out the door
