Chapter 274
Ellie’s POV
The night air hit me like a slap to the face when I burst out of the lounge. I kept moving, heels clicking against the pavement, and stuck my hand out for the first cab I saw.
“Ellie!”
Dominic’s footsteps pounded after me. Cursing under my breath, I dropped my arm and began hurrying further down the street.
“Ellie, would you just-”
“I have nothing to say to you right now,” I said.
“Well, I have things to say to you.”
“Good for you.” I stepped further up the curb and craned my neck looking for a light-up cab sign. “You can say them to yourself on the drive home.”
He came around and planted himself between me and the street, which effectively ruined my cab strategy. I folded my arms and looked at him.
“Move,” I said.
“Not until you let me explain.”
“Explain what?” I laughed bitterly. “You grabbed my phone out of my hand and hung up on my friend.”
“I thought you were talking to-”
“I know who you thought I was talking to,” I said. “And even if I was, that gives you no right to take my phone like that.”
He pressed his lips together.
Behind him, further up the block, I could hear music thumping from the open door of a nightclub. The sign above the entrance glowed purple. A line of people snaked out the door and down the sidewalk.
I looked at it. Then I looked at Dominic, who was still blocking the curb with his arms crossed like he was prepared to stand there all night.
Fine.
I stepped around him and started walking toward the club.
“Where are you going?” he called after me.
I didn’t answer. I heard him curse behind me and then follow, but I didn’t stop.
I walked right to the front of the line. The bouncer took one look at me, recognizing me immediately, and waved me through without a word. I was inside before Dominic even reached the door.
The inside of the club was deafeningly loud. The lights were low and cycling through deep purples and blues, strobing occasionally over a crowd of bodies packed onto the dance floor. I moved into it immediately, letting the crowd close in behind
I got about twenty feet in before I found a pocket of space and turned around. Dominic was just inside the entrance, scanning the room. He was too tall to blend in easily. I watched him look left, then right, and then a strobe swept across the crowd and he spotted me. I moved deeper into the crowd just as he began to move toward me.
Unfortunately, the crowd was too thick beyond that point to squeeze through. Dominic caught up, hand closing around my wrist. He turned me around, leaning down close so I could hear him. “Can we please just go outside and talk?”
shook my head, pulled my arm away, and began to sway to the music
‘Ellie.”
‘Go home, Dominic!” My voice was nearly lost below the music. I didn’t turn, but I could feel Dominic there, still watching me
The song changed, tempo picking up, and the crowd shifted around me. I moved with it and tried to ignore the fact that I could eel him watching me. He tugged on the mate bond, and I ignored it, gnawing on the inside of my cheek.
I turned slightly and scanned the crowd next to me. A man nearby caught my eye and smiled. He was decent-looking and he was eyeing me like he wanted to dance.
I smiled back and stepped closer.
I could feel Dominic’s eyes harden against my back. Good. I paid him no mind as I began to sway with the man. If he was going to treat me like a cheater who couldn’t be trusted, then I would act like one. See how he liked it then.
The man barely had time to register what was happening before Dominic stepped between us and said something close to his ear that I couldn’t hear over the music. The man looked once at Dominic’s expression and quickly moved away.
Dominic turned to me just as I was about to slip away into the crowd. His arm shot out, reaching for my waist this time, and ooped around me. Before I could breathe, he pulled me flush against his body and began to move.
