“Also, Grandma’s headaches have been terrible lately. You should go check on her. The chief said you studied general practice in your combined bachelor’s-master’s program. Grandma has a sharp temper, but don’t take it to heart. You’re the younger one, so you should-”
Mia felt like rolling her eyes so hard they’d get stuck.
She held up a hand, signaling Ethan to stop talking. “I’m not interested in your plans. Don’t come looking for me again.”
She didn’t bother listening another second and turned straight around.
People really lost all self-awareness once they got used to being spoiled unreasonably.
He even wanted her to go back and look after that grumpy old woman. Margaret had hated her from the start. She’d treated her like a servant, mocking her in public and private.
Even the staff had never treated her like Ethan’s wife. They’d looked down on her.
Margaret had been good at throwing fits to get her way. The tiniest mistake and she’d run to Ethan to complain.
She’d been accused of refusing priority care for her relatives from out of town, of not speeding up their CT scans, and of not booking top specialists for them. Margaret had even caused scenes at her clinic several times, saying Mia was a terrible woman.
All the public attention had made it extremely embarrassing for her.
Mia’s impatient attitude wore out Ethan’s already thin patience.
“Mia, I’ve already compromised. Just tell me what you want.”
Mia looked at him in disbelief. “I don’t want anything. I can’t treat Lina. It’s not just because
she framed me.”
Ethan pressed, “Then why?”
Mia said, “There are three types of people I will not treat.
“First: those who don’t trust medicine. I don’t treat them.
“Second: those who are arrogant and nasty. I don’t treat them.
“Third: those who bring ruin on themselves. I don’t treat them.

“Lina fits all three. She even sacrificed her own baby just to frame me. She doesn’t deserve to be a mother, or even a decent person. I can’t help her. Find someone else.”
Mia knew exactly why Lina was in that state.
The miscarriage had destroyed her energy. Combined with her old illness, her body had collapsed. She was only alive because of expensive daily medication.
Otherwise, she would have died long ago. What goes around comes around.
Mia didn’t bother saying any of this. If they wanted to keep ruining themselves, let them. The world would be better off without another selfish, delusional troublemaker.
“She knows she was wrong now,” Ethan said quickly. He reached for her arm before she could leave.
But before he could touch her, Mia pulled away sharply.
Her face was colder than ever. She stared at him with obvious disgust. “Mr. Hale, show some respect.”
Mia walked straight back into Harmony Clinic.
Ethan frowned behind her, holding back his anger. “Mia! I’m being nice first. Don’t make me use other methods.”
By the time he finished speaking, Mia had already disappeared inside.
Ethan stood there for a long time. Mark reminded him that Lina had been taken into surgery again. Only then did he turn and get into the car.
Inside the car, his close friend Blake Kane had watched everything. He stared at Ethan in disbelief.
“Dude, what was that? You call that begging for help? You looked prouder than a peacock in a park.
“I was hoping you’d talk some sense into her so she could help my grandpa with his heart. Now you’ve made it so awkward I didn’t even dare get out.”
Ethan closed his eyes and leaned back, steadying his breathing. “There are plenty of experts worldwide. Why does it have to be her?”
Blake sighed. “It really does. My grandpa’s heart condition is rare. She’s the only one who’s published research on it. If you stay on bad terms with her, don’t even say you know me.”
Ethan stayed silent.

It was the first time he’d reached out to Mia, and he’d been rejected completely. He was in a terrible mood.
