“Sean and Ryan used to obey you, didn’t they? So this is where they put you-just a tiny clinic under the Cole Group. Looks like you’re not that important after all.”
Ethan thought he had struck Mia’s weak spot.
He had no idea her expression only grew more indifferent than before.
“Is there anything else?” Mia asked, her voice flat and clearly impatient.
Ethan felt annoyed by her cold attitude.
He repeated firmly, “I told you. I want to make a deal with you.”
Mia lifted her eyes coldly.
She looked at Ethan with obvious sarcasm and let a careless smile pull at her lips.
“You…”
Under her gaze, Ethan strangely felt a flicker of guilt.
“A deal?”
Ever since she learned Lina’s heart condition had returned, and after Ethan had asked to speak privately the night before, she had known he would not give up easily.
He had come on purpose.
His devotion to Lina remained unchanged.
Too bad she was no longer the girl she had been three years ago.
“Mr. Hale,” Mia said, slipping both hands into the pockets of her white coat, “are you asking me to marry you again? To wait on Lina hand and foot for another three years? Or do you want me to take the blame for Lina’s miscarriage, wait until she gets pregnant again, and fulfill her dream of having a child?”
Ethan’s expression froze slightly.
His reaction told Mia she had guessed right.

“I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you, Mr. Hale,” Mia said.
She was only still talking calmly because she wanted to make things clear.
“You probably don’t understand me. Once I make up my mind, I stick to it no matter what. I was stubborn when I married you, and I was equally serious when I divorced you. I hold no affection for you anymore. So I will never go back to you or take care of your first love. If you plan to use the same trick again, find someone else.”
Ethan frowned.
The words “never go back to you” bothered him for no reason.
But he quickly pushed the feeling aside.
He looked into Mia’s cold eyes and spoke slowly, “A good doctor cares for everyone. Lina is seriously ill, and many doctors couldn’t help her. Can’t you put aside your grudges and help her?”
Mia tilted her head and looked at him, almost amused.
He’s good at speaking in a noble, self-righteous way.
“Yes, a good doctor cares for everyone,” Mia said, her voice icy.
“But even parents can’t stop ungrateful children from destroying themselves.”
She stressed the word “ungrateful” heavily, full of hidden meaning.
Ethan understood at once.
Lina had acted gentle and grateful in front of others.
But the security footage told the truth.
In private, her words had been arrogant and provocative.
She had kept taunting Mia with her past with Ethan.

“I apologize on her behalf,” Ethan said, backing down to negotiate.

“I’ll let go of Lina’s miscarriage and the damage to Hale Group and Lina’s reputation. Name any condition to make you treat her again. I’ll do anything I can.”
Ethan spoke with confidence.
Mia’s three-year-long crush had been real.
He believed his offer would make her give in.
He was ready to let Mia return to the Hale family and accept whatever demands she made.
“Or-if you’re worried-once Lina’s health improves, we can have a child. That will give you security in the Hale family.”
In a wealthy family, a child meant a solid position.
That was why he had kept his distance from her before.
He had feared she would become spoiled, or use the child to gain power and neglect Lina’s
treatment.
He had always believed that what one could not have was the most desirable.
So he had kept her just out of reach.
“If you agree, we can finish the paperwork this afternoon.”
Once, this offer would have hurt her.
No wife wanted a child only to help another woman.
Yet part of her might have been happy.
But now, Mia watched Ethan’s overconfident self coldly and only felt absurd.
She wanted to ask where he had gotten such ridiculous confidence,
Then she realized.
