Remembering it now, she just felt stupid. When a man’s heart is gone, there’s nothing you can do to win it back. And every time she saw other people’s children, she would think of herself. All she could do was feel envious.
Sean looked down at her. “What? Envious of their kids? You like children?”
Tracy, realizing she’d been staring, shook her head. “No. I was just thinking about the past. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
His hand suddenly tightened, and he pulled her around to face him. “You’re with me, and you’re thinking about another man?”
She couldn’t avoid his gaze. They held eye contact for a second before she flinched, looking away guiltily.
Sean sighed and let her go. He simply took her hand and continued walking.
As they reached a more secluded area, three large, menacing men in black suddenly rushed out from the shadows. The leader had a long scar across his face, making him look terrifying in the dark.
The scar-faced man lunged at Tracy with a knife. Sean reacted instantly, kicking the man so hard he flew backward. But the blade still managed to slice across Sean’s left wrist.
He didn’t even flinch. Shoving Tracy behind him, he engaged the other two men.
The leader struggled to his feet, spitting out a mouthful of blood. His eyes were murderous. He turned and charged at Tracy again, “Go to hell!”
Tracy, startled, ducked down to grab a nearby stick. The movement made her just barely evade the man’s lunge. The attacker, however, wasn’t so lucky. He had charged with too much force, and with Tracy dodging, he slammed headfirst into a metal basketball pole. The impact made him see stars, and he nearly passed out.
This woman has definitely had training. The brief said she was a weak woman with no strength to even tie up a chicken! This isn’t what I was told!
Tracy walked over, raised the stick, and brought it down hard on the man’s head, knocking him out cold.
She looked over and saw Sean was at a disadvantage. His hand was bleeding badly. She raced over to help.
Just then, the sound of sirens blared in the distance. Someone must have called
the police..

Hearing the sirens, the two remaining attackers gave up the fight. They glanced at their fallen leader, then turned and fled.
Tracy ran to Sean and pressed her hands over his wound, trying to stop the bleeding.
When the police arrived, the two men were gone. They handcuffed the unconscious man. Tracy pointed in the direction the others had fled. “Officer, he has accomplices! They went that way!”
The officer nodded. “We’ll get them. Your friend is injured. You should get him to the hospital. You can come by the station later to give a statement.”
“Okay,” Tracy agreed.

She squeezed his hand, which was slick with cold sweat, and soothed him. “It’s okay. Just hold on. I’ll blow on it for you later, and it won’t hurt.”
When she was little and got hurt, her mother would always say, “I’ll blow on it, and it won’t hurt anymore.” It never actually worked, but just being comforted felt good.
Sean’s lips curved slightly. “Okay. You have to blow on it later. I’m very afraid of pain.”
After Sean’s wound was treated, the police came by. The two men who had fled had been apprehended.
As the officer took their statements, he said, “All three of them are keeping their mouths shut. No matter how we question them, they just say they had a personal grudge against you and did this because they were angry. They won’t give up who hired them.”
Tracy nodded. She would have been surprised if they had.
It wasn’t hard to guess. The only person she’d had conflict with recently was Yvonne. It was obvious who was behind this. It seemed that mother-daughter pair was getting desperate, resorting to hiring men to kill her. Luckily, they hadn’t succeeded,
She wasn’t going to let this go. If Yvonne wanted to play, she would play.
After the police left, Tracy drove Sean home. The wound wasn’t deep, but it was on his hand, and he wouldn’t be able to take care of himself for a while,
