Chapter 258 The End of the Rope
Tracy looked at the surgeon with a wave of relief. “Thank you, Doctor. Truly.”
The rest of the family swapped bewildered looks. Since when was Tracy on such familiar terms with a man like Sean Johnson?
“Don’t thank me,” Dr. Morrison replied. “Thank Mr. Sean”
As soon as he stepped inside, Tracy dialed Sean’s number. “Sean, thank you for finding a specialist for my grandma tonight.”
“If you really want to thank me,” Sean’s voice came through, low and effortless, “show a little
sincerity. Don’t just give me li
Tracy felt her face heat up. She knew exactly what kind of sincerity he was looking for, but with her grandmother’s life hanging in the anything else.
She couldn’t bring herself to think about
“Fine. We’ll talk when I get back.”
She hung up and leaned against the cold hospital wall, her legs barely holding her noticed how pale she had become.

Chastened by the doctor’s earlier warning, the Xanders didn’t try to start another fight. They sat in a tense, heavy silence, waiting.
Half an hour later, the light above the emergency room went dark. The family scrambled to their feet as the doctor emerged.
“Doctor,” Trevor asked, his voice shaking. “How is she? How’s my
mother?”
Dr. Morrison pulled off his mask, his expression unreadable. “It’s not good. She needs to be moved to the ICU for observation. We’ll have to see if she shows any signs of improvement over the next few days.”
“Thank you,” Trevor managed.
A moment later, Sarah was wheeled out. She looked fragile, her face nearly as white as the sheets, a ventilator mask covering half her features. It was a heartbreaking sight.
Tracy tried to move closer to the gurney, but Chase stepped in her way and shoved her back. “You’re the last person who should be touching her. You did this to her. Just get lost.”
“If you want to throw a fit, go do it at your own house,” Jared added coldly. “Stop making a scene here.”

Trevor didn’t look at her either. “Just go, Tracy. Don’t humiliate yourself further. Your grandmother can’t handle any more stress. If she wakes up and sees you, it’ll just start all over again. Leave before she comes to.”
The force of Chase’s shove sent Tracy hitting the floor, the skin on her palms scraping raw against the linoleum. She didn’t fight back. She just sat there, watching them wheel her grandmother away.
Dr. Morrison reached down and helped her up, letting out a weary sigh. “Your grandmother is in bad shape, yet your family hasn’t even bothered to ask for the specifics of her condition. It’s clear they aren’t recovery. Ms. Tracy, she doesn’t have much time. If

Tracy froze, her heart hammering. She grabbed the doctor’s sleeve, her voice cracking. “Doctor, Sean trusts you, so I know you’re the best. Please. You have to save her.”
For the first time, the reality of death felt suffocatingly close. If Sarah left, Tracy would truly be alone. There were still so many things left unsaid, so many wounds between Sarah and Morgan that hadn’t healed. She couldn’t go yet.
Dr. Morrison shook his head slowly. “I’m a doctor, Tracy. I can treat a disease, but I can’t stop time. You know her history as well as I do. In the time she has left, the best thing you can do is try to make her happy.”
He turned and walked away, leaving Tracy standing in the middle of the corridor. The tears started then, falling silently like broken threads.
It was nearly midnight by the time Tracy got back to her apartment complex. The parking garage was deathly still, the silence so thick she could hear her own footsteps.
She had just stepped out of her car when a hand clamped over her mouth from behind. Before the world went black, a man’s voice hissed in her ear.
“Bitch… you’re the one who put Scar and the others behind bars. I’ve been waiting for a chance to catch you alone. This is my lucky day.”
Over at the hospital, Yvonne was still on nursing duty when her phone buzzed. She saw the number and slipped out into the hallway to answer.
“We’ve got her,” a rough voice growled. “I sent the photo. Transfer the money.”

Yvonne swiped through her messages until she saw the image: Tracy, unconscious and bound, slumped in the dirt.
A slow, dark smile spread across Yvonne’s face. “I’ll send a hundred thousand now. Once she’s dead, send me the proof and I’ll pay the rest.”
“Deal,” the man laughed. “Send the cash and I’ll finish it now. No loose ends, I promise.””
Yvonne hung up, only to find Trevor standing right behind her. Her heart nearly stopped.
She scrambled to find her composure, forcing a breath. “Dad! You scared me. Why are you sneaking around in the dark? I didn’t even hear you.”
She searched his face, terrified he’d heard the call. She wasn’t worried about the phone, it was a burner, untraceable to her but she needed to know how much he’d caught.
