.Chapter 36-3

“Touch my sister again and I’ll turn you inside out,” Dash said coldly.

The third guard made the mistake of trying to get to me while my protectors were busy. I was sitting on the floor with a knife wound in my chest slowly healing, so he probably thought I was

helpless.

He was wrong.

I grabbed the blade that was still lodged in my ribs and yanked it free, ignoring the fresh burst of

pain. When he got close enough, I drove it into his thigh, making him scream and drop his sword.

“That’s for the headache,” I said, pulling the knife out and stabbing him again. “And that’s for the

bruises.”

Kane was at my side instantly, pulling me away from the bleeding guard. “Easy, love. Save some for

me.”

All three attackers were now unconscious on the floor, but very much alive. Kane had been careful not to kill them, which told me he had plans for them later.

“I want to take my time with them,” he said quietly, confirming my suspicions. “They touched

what’s mine.”

Once the immediate threat was dealt with, Dash rounded on both of us, his eyes wild with

confusion and protective fury.

“Okay, what the actual fuck is going on here?” he demanded. “Fated mates? How the hell did you

two even meet?”

I looked at Kane, who was still kneeling beside me, his hand hovering protectively over my

stomach.

“It’s a long story,” I said weakly.

“I’ve got time,” Dash crossed his arms. “Start talking. Because right now it looks like my sister

hooked up with the enemy king and forgot to mention it.”

“I would never betray your family,” Kane said firmly, looking directly at Dash. “Your sister means

everything to me. Your entire pack means everything to me now.”

“Oh really?” Dash’s voice was skeptical. “Because three months ago you were a stranger, and now

you’re apparently the father of my niece or nephew.”

“Dash-” I started.

“No, Si. I want to hear this. I want to know how the hell you ended up mated to a man who’s been missing for eighteen years.”

Kane’s jaw tightened, but he met Dash’s challenging stare head-on. “We ran into each other in the woods. I saved her life. Multiple times. She saved mine in return. She recognized the bond first, and we fell for each other.”

“Just like that?”

“Not just like that,” I said softly. “It was complicated. I rejected him at first.”

“You rejected your fated mate?” Dash looked at me like I’d grown a second head. “Why?”

“Because I thought he’d betrayed me. I was wrong, though!” I added before my brother tried to rip

my mate’s head off his shoulders.

Dash studied both of our faces, then let out a long sigh. “You know Dad’s going to lose his mind

when he finds out, right? And Mom’s going to want every single detail.”

“I know,” I said.

“And I’m going to be the most overprotective uncle in the history of overprotective uncles.”

Despite everything, I smiled. “I’m counting on it.”

Dash’s expression softened as he looked between us. “But if you’re happy, Si… if he makes you happy… then I guess I can learn to live with it.”

“He does,” I said quietly, looking at Kane. “He makes me very happy.”

Kane fell to his knees in front of me, his eyes wide and vulnerable as they darted between my

smile, my eyes and my stomach.

“You’re pregnant with my baby,” he whispered, and I grimaced.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner-” I started.

“Don’t apologize. Just… is it true? Tell me it is, please.”

I smiled through the tears that were suddenly running down my face, my hand moving instinctively to rest on my belly.

“Yes. It’s true. I’m pregnant,” I said, my voice breaking with emotion.

His eyes followed the movement of my hand, and when he looked back up at me, there was

wonder written across his features.

“Three months now,” I added softly.

Claim

The expression that crossed his face was indescribable. Joy, terror, love, and protectiveness all

rolled into one.

“Our baby,” he whispered, and the awe in his voice broke my heart and put it back together again all

at once.
