Chapter 10
That holiday break was anything but pleasant. After getting caught in the rain that day, I came down with a high fever.
It lasted all the way through the holiday itself.
Right on time, Noah sent me a gift and wished me a wonderful holiday.
When he saw I was bored, he kept me company by playing rock–paper- scissors with me, and in the end, on a dare, he came to pick me up and take me back to school.
I had blocked Adrian on every possible form of contact, so I never heard another thing about him or Chloe.
When the new semester started, Noah came to get me and helped carry my luggage to the car. Dad suddenly appeared behind me out of nowhere.
“No wonder you stopped chasing after that kid from the Cole family. So you found someone better.”
Seeing Noah about to come over, I hurriedly clapped a hand over Dad’s mouth. “Dad!”
“Kid, you take good care of Tess, you hear?”
Noah smiled. “Yes, Mr. Vaughn. I’ll take good care of her.”

I scrambled into the car at once and urged him to drive. “My dad got the wrong idea just now. Why didn’t you explain?”
“Because there was no need to explain. I really do want to take care of you.”
His eyes stayed on the road, and he said it lightly, almost casually, but his hands were gripping the steering wheel tight.
In my previous life, we had been nothing to each other, and yet he had still taken care of me with such quiet, meticulous attention.
In this life, he would probably be even better to me.
I let out a few soft laughs and closed my eyes, pretending to sleep along the way. And somehow, I really did fall asleep.
When the car pulled up in front of my dorm building, he stopped but didn’t wake me. I only startled awake when my phone rang.
“You didn’t wake me up!”
“You were sleeping so peacefully.” His eyes curved as he smiled.
“Thanks for today. I’ll treat you to dinner another time.” I gathered my things and started to get out,
He called after me softly. “Tessa… could you try liking me? Or… could I ask you out?”
I froze, my palms began to sweat. On impulse, I almost wanted to say yes right then and there, but deep down, I was still afraid of being in a relationship.

“Don’t rush to say no. I’ll stay by your side, as long as you don’t mind me being there, until you make it through this.”
Those doe–like eyes of his were fixed on me so intently that for one strange moment, I almost felt as if he knew something.
As if under a spell, I nodded.
