Chapter 11
Back in the dorm, Zoe had already arrived. The second she saw me come in, she threw her arms around me in excitement. “Tess, why weren’t you answering your phone? Do you have any idea what happened? Chloe took a leave from school!”
I let out a surprised sound. “Why?”
“Oh, you are asking exactly the right person.” She dragged over a chair and sat down. “Doesn’t her family run a small business? Well, word is Adrian’s family went after their business and crushed them completely. Chloe went broke overnight, and her family moved away.”
“Moved away?” There was no way she would have given up willingly.
“They had to. Chloe went to confront Adrian about it and stabbed him with a knife. Adrian didn’t cover for her this time either–he sent her straight to jail. Her family couldn’t stay here after that, so they moved.”
Zoe sucked in a breath. “Seriously, what happened to Adrian? How did he suddenly turn on his childhood sweetheart like that?”
I shook my head. “They were always cold–blooded people. It’s not surprising they’d turn on anyone.”
Zoe nodded as though that explained everything. “Still, Adrian was hurt really badly. He’s still hospitalized. Aren’t you going to visit him?”
My expression changed instantly. “Don’t bring him up to me.”

Chapter 11
Zoe raised both hands. “Okay, okay, I won’t!”
The truth was, I had received texts from an unknown number. I knew they were from Adrian.
He said he had already dealt with Chloe, that he had made sure she would never show up in front of me again in this life, and that she would never have it easy.
He also said he was badly hurt–so badly he had nearly lost half his life–and that he wanted to see me.
I blocked the number right away and ignored him.
