Chapter 13

Power that should be mine.

“I can’t believe this,” I state aloud, my hands balling into fists.

“Don’t worry, dear,” Kane’s mother says then, reminding me that she’s still at my side. “We’ll make sure that bitch gets what she deserves.”

I turn to the woman, blinking at her.

“You don’t want her as Luna either?” I ask.

The woman snorts. “Of course not. She doesn’t even deserve to breathe the same air as my son.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” I reply. “Someone really needs to put her in her place.”

Kane’s mother laughs in response, nodding her approval as she takes my hand and gives it a pat.

“Which is exactly what we’re going to do,” she insists. “We’re going to use the preparations and training for the Luna ceremony to teach Evelyn a very valuable lesson.”

Her words bring a smile to my face, the forming of our plan absolutely delicious.

There’s no way we’re going to let that bitch’s arrogance go unchecked.

Evelyn’s POV

“I have to say that I am quite surprised,” Dr. Borsheim states as he looks over my lab work. “Delightfully surprised, that is. It seems to me that your wolf is indeed showing signs of recovery.”

1 grin at this news. I knew I hadn’t merely imagined the responses from my wolf, or that my theories hadn’t been crazy.

“But,” the doctor continues. “Your wolf is still very weak. Based on the different accounts you mentioned, though, it does sound as though your wolf is awakened by your somewhat… ‘crazy’ behavior. So it appears there is a method to your madness.”

Again, I’m elated by his confirmation. It’s nice to know that my efforts weren’t for nothing. Plus, if I continue my ridiculous behavior then I can hit two birds with one stone access my wolf and annoy Kane.

I leave Dr. Borsheim’s office feeling lighter. For the first time in a long time, there seems to be hope for my future, something to genuinely look forward to.

I’m so distracted by the various possibilities running through my mind that I almost don’t register the commotion ahead of me. My brow furrows as I hear people begin to scream, scattering out of the hallway. As they clear the way, I suddenly realize what they’re running from.

Ahead of me, a feral wolf is charging down the hallway. It’s headed right toward me. Only, there is one other person blocking the wolf’s path to me.

To my horror, a child stands alone in the hallway, appearing as though she is frozen in fear as she can’t bring herself to move. Without a single thought, I sprint toward her.

Somehow, I make it before the feral wolf does, allowing me to throw myself in front of the child as the wolf continues to close in. My heart is racing in my chest – I’ve never been face to face with another wolf like this as I’ve always known I don’t stand a chance. However, I won’t allow this wolf to get the child standing behind me.

The feral wolf finally reaches me and I’m ready to endure whatever pain they bring. Only, before they can tear their teeth into me, my body is suddenly fills with warmth.

My wolf fights to the surface, taking over my body as I release a fierce snarl right in the wolf’s face, my body taking a vicious and defensive stance to protect the pup behind me. I snap at the wolf as they lurch away from me, a whine singing from their throat.

As I blink, my blood still runs warm as I stare at the wolf in front of me. They are no longer tearing through the halls, but they’re now calm, sitting on the floor in front of me.

Looking at me with complete submission.
