Chapter 14

Evelyn’s POV

+25 Bonus

As the wolf continues to sit in front of me, I turn and pick up the young girl standing behind me. She allows me to take her into my arms before she throws her arms around my neck and hugs me with gratitude.

That’s when the doctors and nurses arrive, sprinting up and quickly restraining the feral wolf that does not struggle as they administer a sedative.

I breathe out a sigh of relief, watching as a weeping woman breaks through the crowd.

“Thank you, thank you!” She tells me and it occurs to me that this is the child’s mother. I give her a small smile and pass the girl off to her, watching with pride as the mother carries her daughter away – safe and sound.

“Evelyn!”

The call of my name makes me turn, spotting Dr. Borsheim making his way down the hall. He is a picture of professionalism, but his eyes are slightly widened in wonder. A few other stunned doctors and nurses follow him.

“That was a very brave thing you did!” one of the nurses says as she reaches me first.

Her words shock me, as does the warmth of her skin against mine as she begins to furiously shake my hand. As this is Kane’s pack hospital. I’m not used to this reaction for any of the nurses. They’re usually cold and unwelcoming – like everyone else in the pack.

Usually, they only greet me with disapproving whispers and skeptical glances. But now they all seem to slightly soften, another doctor joining in to thank me.

“If it weren’t for you, a lot of people could have gotten hurt,” he adds.

“Please,” a female doctor begins. “We’d be grateful if you come back in the future and assist with other feral wolf treatment. With your help, we could make a lot of headway with these patients.”

Shocked, all I can do is nod, which pleases them all before they slip away, likely to help other guests and staff. However, Dr.

Borsheim stays behind.

“You’ve made quite the impression on the staff,” he tells me. “Especially me. I’m amazed – it appears that your wolf may be stronger than I had imagined,”

My scalp prickles as his words sink in, Dr. Borsheim’s words add to my pool of hope, causing me to smile brightly at him.

“You did well,” he says, returning my smile. “Continue to keep tabs on your wolf and keep me updated. Let’s try to meet again soon.”

“I will,” I tell him happily, turning to leave the pack hospital. I’m in such a good mood I have to stop myself from skipping out of there. After years and years of my wolf lying dormant, of thinking something was wrong with me – this feeling is indescribable.

I’m still smiling to myself as I return back to the pack house, discovering as I arrive that Kane has already left. His absence only adds to my relief as I make my way inside, planning on heading to my room. However, I’m stopped as Kane’s mother – Alice – appears in the doorway of the main room.

“Evelyn,” she greets me, the tone of her voice unplaceable. “I have some news for you. Come.”

Feeling as though I don’t have much of a choice, I follow her into the main room, my shoulders tensing as I note Bianca sitting in one of the armchairs in the corner.

“I just wanted to let you know that your Luna ceremony will be held in a few days,” Alice states. It takes everything in me not to sigh – I’d prefer if the ceremony didn’t happen at all.

“Of course, it won’t be very grand because of your wolf being so weak and the wedding technically being arranged,” Alice continues. “Still, this will be your first public appearance in front of the pack and media. So it’s important that you make a good impression.”

Suddenly I feel like a child being warned to be on their best behavior. I guess I can understand, though – Kane’s mother is traditional and finds putting on a face is important.

“Starting tomorrow,” she goes on. “Bianca will be responsible for teaching you the

necessary etiquette for the ceremony.”

Bianca? Seriously?

I raise a brow, looking from Alice to Bianca. I expect to see her rolling her eyes, grimacing in annoyance of being stuck with me. Instead, she seems to be trying to hide a smile from her red lips, surprisingly…eager.

Eager to cause trouble, most likely.

I can’t help but feel uneasy and my wolf seems to agree. I can feel her stir inside of me, a sense of distrust rolling in my stomach.

Don’t worry, I tell her. Things are different now. If she tries anything, I won’t tolerate it like I did before.

My wolf approves of this.

The following day, I arrive at the parlor room where Bianca, Alice, and I had agreed to meet after lunch. However, I admittedly took my time getting here, purposely coming late. It’s the least I can do after the way Bianca was practically buzzing with glee yesterday afternoon.
