Chapter 139
Diana gave me a knowing look while she picked up her clipboard. “Well, at the very least, everyone now knows the kind of person Bianca is,” she commented. “And speaking of…”
I glanced over my shoulder to see Josie sheepishly approaching us. I could see her struggle to maintain eye contact.
“Josie, is everything alright?” I asked her.
She meekly nodded. “I…I just wanted to thank you for your help yesterday,” she said.
Diana and I spared each other a surprised look.
I offered a smile. “It was no problem. I’m glad that the wounds didn’t turn out to be as deep as they appeared.
“I had one of the doctors take a look at them last night when I had the bandages changed. According to them, the scars shouldn’t be too noticeable as long as I apply the right cream,” she explained.
“Well, that’s good to hear.” Just as I made the move to head off to my first patient, Josie grabbed my wrist.
She took in a deep, shaky breath. “There was also something else…I wanted to apologize.”
My brows lifted. “Apologize? For what?”
Her face twisted with a mix of shame and embarrassment. “For how poorly I treated you since you first joined us here. I’ve always been so easily influenced by Bianca and her opinion of others. Instead of giving you a chance to get to know you, I simply went along with the rest of the group out of habit.”
Wow. Josie’s apology momentarily distracted me from the ache in my chest. I hadn’t anticipated how much I needed to hear something like that since this whole part of my life began. Of course, I wished that it was coming from a few different people-notibly Kane, Bianca, maybe even my own father.
But I appreciated it, nonetheless. I was glad to see that Josie was willing to think for herself.
“Thank you, Josie. That really means a lot, and I hope this means that you and I could perhaps start over.
I watched her eagerly nod her head before slipping out of the ward. From there, I decided to head straight to the restricted area. Since Kane was no longer expected to act as a chaperone, I was able to treat the feral rogues during my normal work hours and not have to work around his schedule.
I glanced at the soldier on duty and requested that he step into the room with me.

“Luna, are you certain that-”
“I understand your hesitation to come into these rooms given the recent events,” I said. “However, I’ve made a promise to Alpha Kane that I would not be treating these patients alone. All you need to do is take a seat over in one of those chairs and supervise.”
“What if they wake up while you’re treating them?”
“I’ve been assured that each rogue has received a newly administered sedative at sunrise,” I told him.
The soldier bowed his head in compliance while I pulled up a chair to the first patient. As usual, I rested my hand on their forearm while keeping an eye on their monitor. So far, everything was proceeding like normal.
But as I sat there in silence, with nothing but the sound of the machines around me, my mind slipped back to my own problems, And with it came the ache in my chest that I tried to forget.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed something vaguely familiar. A mark on the rogue’s neck. The same mark that I had noticed on one of the other patients.
I wasn’t one to believe in coincidences. Something was going on behind all of these feral rogue attacks. Something big.
