Chapter 140

Evelyn’s POV

“Luna, will you please let me escort you to one of the doctors?” the soldier pleaded.

After two and a half hours of treating the feral rogues in their comatose state, I felt utterly drained. Now, both my chest and my head ached with unfathomable pressure that nearly brought me to my knees.

I hadn’t considered that, given the rogues’ extreme condition, they required such extensive amounts of my healing ability. By the time I got through the last patient in that one room alone, I struggled to stay on my feet.

I braced my body against one of the walls and tried to ease his concern. “I’m alright,” I said quietly. “I just wasn’t prepared for how much this was going to end up draining me.”

The poor soldier looked barely convinced. “Luna, will you at least let me inform Alpha Kane?”

I shook my head as my eyes fluttered shut. “The only thing that you’ll need to clue him in on is that I’m doing my job and none of the rogues are giving any trouble. Trust me, he doesn’t need to be made aware of my passing headaches, okay?”

His shoulders deflated in defeat. “Alright. But at the very least, let me help you out of here so you can rest in a less ‘hazardous’ area.”

I nodded in agreement as he hooked a supportive arm around my shoulders. As the two of us exited the restricted area, I braced myself for the multiple stares that landed on me.

Diana practically tripped over one of the benches just to get to me. Her face was stricken with panic. “Are you okay?! What happened?”

I’m fine,” I assured her. “Just feel a little drained, is all.”

She gently pushed me down into one of the open chairs, while one of our other team members passed me a cup of water. I immediately felt myself become flushed. I wasn’t used to this sort of fretting and attention.

“Everyone, I promise, I’m fine,” I told them. “There’s nothing to worry about.”

“Based on how pale you look, I’d beg to differ,” a stern voice came from across the room.

I tilted my head to find a displeased-looking Alexander leaning against the wall. His eyes never left mine as he pushed himself forward.

Thankfully, Diana ushered everyone back to their stations, leaving Alexander and me to our private conversation.

“Alexander-”

“Something else is going on, isn’t it?” he questioned.

My brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean,” he countered. “For God’s sake, Evie, you look as though you’re seconds away from passing out. Are you sick?”

“I’m not sick. I’m just drained from treating the rogues.” The fact that my eyes continued to droop was no help to my argument. “I think it’s because they’re condition is so severe, it’s been taking a toll on my abilities.”

“Don’t you think that your husband should be made aware of this situation?” he asked firmly.

I shrugged my shoulders and refused to respond. “He’s busy with his own work.” Not to mention that he and I weren’t really on speaking terms at the moment.

He let out a muffled growl of disapproval under his breath. Being friends with Alexander for so long, he knew most of my quirks. He knew when something was bothering me. That my silence meant I was secretly hurting over something.

And that something was my current relationship with Kane. But the last person who needed to know that was Alexander. The guy didn’t need any more reason to hate the man I was married to,

He didn’t need to know how upset I was about the true nature of my marriage to Kane. How horrible an effect it had on my emotional state.

The thought alone was still enough to make me want to cry.

Alexander innocently reached out to brush my hair from my face. “I think you need to see one of the doctors to check you over. Just to ensure that there’s truly nothing else wrong.”

I was quick to shake my head. Dr. Borsheim was the only physician I really trusted. My next appointment wasn’t due for another couple of weeks. I didn’t want to take up his time, knowing that all this really was pure exhaustion.

I stood up from my chair and felt a sharp pang in my chest. It almost knocked the air from my lungs. Something may or may not have been wrong…

Alexander’s eyes grew wide. He was quick to offer me a supportive arm to hold onto.

“Evie.” I hated to hear the worry in his voice.

“Alexander, can you just help me back to my room?” Although I wasn’t sure what the reason was for the pain in my chest, the least I could do was rest to help rejuvenate my strength.

Without a word of complaint, he helped me back to my room and left with the promise to check on me again tomorrow. I swiftly changed out of my work clothes and slid beneath the soft sheets.

I figured, while I was giving myself the chance to rest, I could at least continue theorizing what the marks on the rogues’ necks meant.

However, I fell asleep before my head even hit the pillow.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was startled to find Kane leering over me. His quizzical expression made me believe that word had traveled around.

“Well, it’s good to see you’re still with us,” Kane commented dryly,

I refrained from rolling my eyes. “What time is it?”

“A little after ten,” he answered.

My eyes widened. “Oh, jeez. All I did was come back here to rest a little. I hadn’t meant to miss dinner.”

He narrowed his eyes in pure bewilderment. “Dinner? Evelyn, it’s ten in the morning,”

I let out a sharp gasp. “What?!” I scrambled out of bed and rushed into the bathroom. “Oh, my Goddess.”

How on earth had I managed to sleep for nearly an entire day? I hastily changed into a fresh pair of clothes and

threw my hair up in a clip. I forewent the idea of putting on any makeup, knowing that it would do very little to hide the circles under my eyes.

“Hold on, are you going to tell me what is going on with you?” Kane questioned.

Oh, boy. Was he truly asking me this out of genuine concern? Or was it merely because of his precious contract?

For what it was worth, I no longer felt like I was struggling to stay awake. But the pain in my chest was still prevalent.

“It’s nothing you need to concern yourself with,” I said passively. “You can rest assured that I’m still upholding my end of the contract, Isn’t that what matters?”

His voice came out low. “Evelyn.” He rested his hand on my shoulder.

I instantly shook him off as if his touch burned me. I ignored the affronted look on his face as I headed toward the

door.

He called out my name a second time, but I had already slammed the door shut behind me. An awful mixture of anger, sadness, and unbridled devastation struck me hard.

What more did he expect from me?

With every step, I felt as though I was inching closer to my breaking point.
