Chapter 180

Kane’s POV

“Like hell!!”

I couldn’t believe that Evelyn had traveled all the way out here. Had she lost her mind??

Yes, I was still furious with her. Having discovered those papers that her mother left to her, I didn’t know what to think.

Why hadn’t she told me about them in the first place? Why keep them a secret?

These were questions I should have given her the opportunity to answer, but I didn’t.

I just couldn’t see past the cloud of devastation and rage that clouded my judgment. So I left. I left without a word, finally feeling the guilt of my action settle in the pit of my stomach just as I reached the battle grounds.

Despite my anger toward her, I still deeply cared for her. So much so that I was grateful to know she wasn’t going to be anywhere near all of this carnage.

At least, that was the goddamned plan!

If I had to guess, my first thought would have been that Henri must have called her. Amongst the pain that was coursing through my body, I made a quick mental note to give that beta of mine a piece of my

mind later.

But at the moment, we were still very much in the middle of the worst battle I’d ever been involved in. These manic, feral rogues struck like mad demons who had escaped the burning pits of the underworld.

We attacked with everything we had, but it still didn’t seem like enough. Now, to think, Evelyn was planning on pulling me from it. And what? Did she think she was going to be able to face off against the rest of the feral rogues on her own?

Henri, still in his wolf state, bounded over to us. He took Evelyn’s place behind me and began dragging me. I quickly snagged Evelyn by the arm.

“Stop,” I demanded. “This is insane. Shouldn’t be here. Henri, take her back to the cars and make sure

she’s sent home!”

But Evelyn was having none of it. Her tight expression remained fixed on her face. Her glare never left mine as she spoke.

“Henri, you are to take Kane back to the medi tent where he will receive treatment to keep him from losing his right leg,” she said bitterly. “Now.”

I couldn’t believe it. Henri paused, glanced between the two of us, and proceeded to continue dragging me up the field. For what it was worth, it seemed like a pretty clear line back to the tent; however, a formidable obstacle had just stepped into our path.

A particularly nasty feral rogue locked eyes with both Evelyn and me. My stomach churned with growing worry. So much of my energy was drained, and with my leg having been injured, I wasn’t able to properly

shift.

We watched the rogue move on all fours, readying to lunge at us. Evelyn tore from my grasp and put a good several feet between us. My eyes grew wide. Panic set in.

“No,” I whispered.

Her eyes began to glow that mystifying shade of silver, while the rest of her features began to draw from her other half. The second Evelyn had shifted, the feral rogue tore his attention to and turned toward her.

“Evelyn, don’t!”

“Come on,” she taunted viciously at the rogue. “Henri, go!!”

Henri quickly moved me across the field, as I watched Evelyn break out into a mad dash in the opposite direction. My heart crashed against my rib cage so severely.

“EVELYN!!”

The further she ran, the more difficult it was getting to keep her in my general line of sight. Soon she became a blur, and I could no longer see her. My nerves spiraled, and even in my current unfit state, I tried to fight against Henri’s hold.

“Stop! Damnit, Henri, you son of a bitch!! Let me go!” I shouted. But he kept going. My voice cracked, frightened, burning tears stung my eyes. “For Gods’ sake, her wolf isn’t even fully developed! She’s going to get herself killed!”
